Cena, who at the time was the face of the company, had been out of action since October of last year after suffering a serious injury to his pectoral muscle, the expectation was that he would be out for 8 months, which almost completely ruled out his participation in the January event.

However, Cena defied all odds and returned much earlier than expected in the 2008 Royal Rumble match. On the night of the event, the Royal Rumble match was coming to an end, with Triple H, another of the most prominent superstars of the moment.
