I like to paint and simultaneously activate my thought-dreams as titles to paintings in real time. Like a journal with a picture stamp. Why not? Do the art gods allow only one expression per piece? If I painted nothing but the title on a canvas and then “titled” it by listing, word for word, the colors and their proportions and contrasts, would it take away from the “painting” which is now just colored words on canvas?
For years Rose has told me to have an exhibition titled “Titled”, which would consist of 25 - 30 large, framed titles on canvas, wood, paper, what have you. Beside each piece would be a tiny business card painting taped where the title card would usually be.
I think the title “untitled”, (which is actually a title), to be a waste of free real estate. To me, titling a picture of a house, “house”, is like having a pet cat called “cat” it’s entire life. True, there’s the cat; it does not need embellishment to live on as a cat. Though I’m sure it hopes to have enough personality to draw some emotion out of you before it dies. I also don’t care if the painting is the message. If I was that skilled, I’d be an illustrator or a political cartoonist who often adds text in the drawing to help out with the meaning. I know my limits as a painter. And I don’t always wish to be clever. In the painting above, my stream of consciousness created a hand, then a landscape, then eyes and rouge, and finally a Confederate and Nazi flag fused in the palm of the hand. Then I made a title. But I could just as well have called it “Saturday” or “Three Weeks Until the Bat Mitzvah”. It’s my work. I make it for me. The opposing expressions create dissonance, and I like that, sometimes. My faith in humanity fizzled about 25 years ago. The last thing I ever want to become is of any sense to you.

I made these paintings and their titles on Monday and Tuesday. Thanks for looking/reading!
