Chance Lagoon - Alaska | Orcas and a Blue Whale! [ENG-GER]

(edited)

Finally we leave Holgate Glacier to Chance Lagoon which has a pretty tight entrance - however as we headed towards the anchorage we come across a huge whale which was around our boat length :

Unfortunately we are not completely sure which type of whale this is, we think might be a blue whale, gray whale, or even a northern right whale - if anyone knows be sure to let me know in the comments!

It was fascinating to see as it was 5 meters away from the boat, we first thought it was injured but realized it was only swimming really slow because it was feeding most likely on krill.

After a few minutes l couldn't find the whale with my drone anymore as it deep dived..

However about 3 hours later on the coast of Nuka Island we saw huge fins sticking out of the water and instantly knew it was orcas:

It was a group of maybe around 10 orcas but l got closely to a smaller family:

We couldn't be more happy, seeing both Orcas and a huge whale was just a one-in-a-life-time especially in Alaska

But time flies as we know, so we had to head over to Chance Lagoon before dark.

A pretty tight entrance leads into a hidden gem:

Just in front the boat there was a small lake:

What was really amazing is that l managed to fly above these mountains and managed to photograph the snow-caped mountains.

That's quite an experience, I've never seen a whale or orca. I might be interested in your job even though I also travel a lot 😀

It really is - you should definitely come to Alaska after your New Zealand trip!

Have a great week ahead

Excellent drone shots of the whales. This is what drones were made for. Observing nature without disturbing it 👍

Thank you! Absolutely drones can capture the nature very well - especially in Alaska with the amazing landscape;)
