With a south east wind we manage to anchor right in front of Akhiok

A small village that now has only 20 people.

With a small 30 minute walk along the air strip we meet two people; a son and a father which are the main people in this village, and they tell us about their town.

Akhiok's history:

Akhiok is a tiny village on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Back in the day, it had over 100 people living off fishing—salmon, halibut, crab—both for food and money. But over time, fishing got more competitive and for the last 50 years fish prices and been the same; but maintainence fees have increased which made most fishing vessels unsuitable. Now, only about 20-30 people live there year-round.

Since fishing isn’t profitable anymore, many young people left for bigger towns with jobs and schools. Those who stay make money by renting out cabins to hunters coming for Kodiak bears, deer, and ducks. This is now the main income for most people down south of Kodiak.

Akhiok's Airport;

It's small - but enough to get pacels and other important things over - people usually have big barges that bring supplies like wood over to the villages. This also is another factor that makes people leave as getting supplies is very expensive.

Akhiok's russian orthadox church:

As this is our religion we always visit places that have a russian orthadox church - even though most of them are run down, they are always open and beautiful inside - the main people also mentioned that they were in the middle of renovating it.

It's quite interesting to see these churches still here as Alaska was owned by Russia 200 years ago - but these churches still lay here which is really lovely and even the most important prayer is read in russian.
