Happening by Annie Ernaux - El Acontecimiento [ENG-ESP]

My first approach to Annie Ernaux's literature was through her text "Happening".

I would summarize this reading as the violent journey of the protagonist from youth to maturity, product of the "event": her unwanted pregnancy and what she has to go through until she manages to put an end to it, in clandestinity, precisely in an era where both those who perform this practice and the women who undergo such a procedure were punished with imprisonment.

"Happening" is a reading that will not be easy to digest for everyone, with a strong focus on decision rather than life. It is a painfully human approach to the magnitude of the changes that are experienced as unsustainable when you are living on just enough financially, when you are in the middle of a college career, when you barely know about the world and its people. But above all, when something like this happens, unexpectedly, without having been conceived in the full consciousness of desire.

Although the decision is made, there is fear, there is terror, there is discomfort, there is death and violence in a fact as legitimate as it is hidden, illegal, secret. Annie Ernaux is abandoned to her fate, and to the possibility of whether or not she can get someone to help her carry out her task. There is morbidity and callousness in several of those who know of this news. Life and death is taken very lightly when women have no right to choose. Annie Ernaux can no longer concentrate on her books and work, chaos has come into her life, as seen in the following quote:

"The bed was unmade; almost a whole day had passed. It is in such details that one can see how disorder begins to creep into one's life".

The author manifests, from the beginning, that her intention to write about the event has the purpose of transforming a horrifying fact into a human fact that hurts, that is uncomfortable and that exists, since she would not be the first or the last to go through something similar.

"It was impossible to determine whether abortion was forbidden because it was wrong, or whether it was wrong because it was forbidden."

"Happening" could be limited to a fact that can be judged in a thousand ways, depending on the beliefs and prejudices that each one has, however, towards the end of the book it becomes evident the true power of decision and desire. A right that should not be denied to a woman:

"Today I know that I had to go through that test and that sacrifice to desire to have children. To accept the violence of reproduction inside my body and to become, in my turn, a place of passage for future generations ".

This is a book that can be finished quickly. The author has a mesmerizing way of writing, which makes me not easily detached from her narration. For that reason, I purchased other books by her that I hope to review soon, and I will also be watching the 2021 movie based on this book. I will tell you on my blog what I thought of it.

I would also like to mention that I respect both the life and the decision and think it is a very personal choice. However, stories like these are testimonies of the degrees of violence that we women have come to experience. We must not forget that, although currently in several countries of the world women can decide about their bodies and this is a legal matter, it was not always this way and many died in the middle of their happening.

Mi primer acercamiento a la literatura de Annie Ernaux fue a través de su texto "El acontecimiento".

Resumiría esta lectura como el violento viaje de la protagonista de la juventud hacia la madurez, producto del "acontecimiento": su embarazo no deseado y lo que tiene que atravesar hasta conseguir ponerle fin a este, en la clandestinidad, precisamente en una época donde son castigados con cárcel tanto los que realizan esta práctica como las mujeres que se someten a dicho procedimiento.

"El acontecimiento" es una lectura que no será fácil de digerir para todo el mundo, con un enfoque fuertemente marcado a la decisión antes que a la vida. Es un acercamiento dolorosamente humano a la magnitud de los cambios que se experimentan como insostenibles cuando se vive con lo justo económicamente, cuando se está en medio de una carrera universitaria, cuando apenas se conoce sobre el mundo y su gente. Pero sobre todo, cuando ocurre algo así, inesperadamente, sin haberse concebido en la consciencia plena del deseo.

A pesar de que la decisión está tomada, hay miedo, hay teror, hay incomodidad, hay muerte y violencia en un hecho tan legítimo como oculto, ilegal, secreto. Annie Ernaux es abandonada a su suerte, y a su posibilidad de conseguir o no a alguien que le ayude a llevar a cabo su cometido. Hay morbo e insensibilidad en varios de los que se enteran de esta noticia. La vida y la muerte se toma muy a la ligera cuando las mujeres no tienen derecho a elegir. Annie Ernaux ya no puede concentrarse en sus libros y trabajos, el caos ha llegado a su vida, como lo vemos en la siguiente cita:

"La cama estaba sin deshacer; había transcurrido casi un día entero. Es en este tipo de detalles donde uno puede apreciar cómo el desorden comienza a introducirse en su vida"

La autora manifiesta, desde el inicio, que su intención de escribir sobre el acontecimiento tiene el propósito de transformar un hecho horroroso en un hecho humano, que duele, que incomoda y que existe, pues no sería la primera ni la última en atravesar algo similar.

"Era imposible determinar si el aborto estaba prohibido porque estaba mal, o si estaba mal porque estaba prohibido"

"El acontecimiento" podría limitarse a un hecho que puede ser juzgado de mil formas, dependiendo de las creencias y prejuicios que cada uno tenga, sin embargo, hacia el final del libro queda en evidencia el verdadero poder de la decisión y el deseo. Un derecho que no debería ser negado a una mujer:

"Hoy sé que debía pasar por esa prueba y ese sacrificio para desear tener niños. Para aceptar la violencia de la reproducción dentro de mi cuerpo y convertirme, a mi vez, en lugar de paso para las generaciones futuras"

Este un libro que puede terminarse rápidamente. La autora tiene una forma hipnotizante de escribir, que hace que uno no pueda separarse fácilmente de su narración. Por ese motivo, adquirí otros libros de ella que espero reseñar próximamente, y también veré la película del 2021 basada en este libro. Les contaré en mi blog qué me pareció.

Me gustaría mencionar, además, que respeto tanto la vida como la decisión y que pienso que es una elección muy personal. Sin embargo, historias como estas son testimonios de los grados de violencia que hemos llegado a vivir las mujeres. No debemos olvidar que, aunque actualmente en varios países del mundo la mujer puede decidir sobre su cuerpo y esto es un asunto legal, no siempre fue de este modo y muchas murieron en medio de su acontecimiento.
