Book review of El Capitán Tormenta [Eng-Esp]

I recently reread Captain Storm. Truly, when I was little, I remembered this book as something enormous, the kind that seemed like it would never end. I don't know if it's because in childhood we're desperate to get to the last pages of these kinds of books, and when it's about to finish, you feel a bit sad that the reading is over. And it's a very short book that packs a lot of action and also a lot of emotion into just a few pages.
Many current novels, with twice as many pages, don't achieve what Salgari accomplishes here in such a short space. The interesting thing is that, even as years go by, this story still feels current. Think about it: a Neapolitan countess named Leonor who disguises herself as a man, leads a company of soldiers, and faces an army to rescue the man she loves. That's no longer just a swashbuckling adventure; it becomes a story of female empowerment, without much speechifying or moralizing. Leonor simply grabs her sword, puts on the disguise, and does what she has to do.

Muchas novelas actuales, con el doble de páginas, no consiguen lo que Salgari logra aquí en tan poco espacio.
Lo interesante es que, aunque pasen los años, esta historia sigue sintiéndose actual. Si pensamos, en una condesa napolitana llamada Leonor que se hace pasar por hombre, lidera una compañía de soldados, para enfrentar a un ejército para rescatar al hombre que ama, ya rso no es solo una aventura de espadachines, viene siendo una historia de empoderamiento femenino, lo que sin mucho discursos ni moralinas. Leonor simplemente coge la espada, se pone el disfraz y hace lo que tiene que hacer.
The book is of its time; there are exaggerations, somewhat theatrical dialogues, and Salgari takes liberties with historical facts. If you're looking for an exact lesson on what happened during the siege of Rhodes or Constantinople, it's better to look elsewhere. Here the author does not adapt the story to real events, but rather adapts real events to the adventures of Captain Storm. This seems fine to me, because in the end what he seeks is the readers' enjoyment.
At a time when young adult literature is full of fantasy worlds and science fiction, it's a pleasure to rediscover a novel as down‑to‑earth as this one, with medieval settings, sword duels, ships and gunpowder, especially considering that we have somewhat abandoned the adventure genre, as if it were only for children, which it is not. Captain Storm is for anyone who wants to dream, be moved, and have a good time.
Furthermore, you can learn things almost without realizing it: about the Knights of Malta, the clashes between Byzantines and Turks, geography... All of this while you suffer and celebrate with the protagonist. If you haven't read Captain Storm or you have it tucked away as "something from when I was a child," I encourage you to look for it. You might be surprised by how modern a novel from over a hundred years ago can be, and also by how much can be told in so few pages.
El libro es de su época, hay exageraciones, diálogos un poco teatrales y Salgari se toma sus libertades con los hechos históricos, si se busca una clase exacta de lo que pasó en el asedio de Rodas o Constantinopla, es mejor mirar hacia otro lado, pues quí el autor no adapta la historia a los hechos reales, sino que adapta los hechos reales a las aventuras del Capitán Tormenta, cosa esta que a mí me parece bien, porque al final lo que se busca es el disfrute de los lectores.
En un momento donde la literatura juvenil está llena de mundos fantásticos y ciencia ficción, da gusto reeencontrar una novela tan terrenal como esta, con sitios medievales, duelos a espada, barcos y pólvora, especialmente si tenemos en cuenta que el género de aventuras lo tenemos un poco abandonado, como si fuera solo para niños, y no es así. El Capitán Tormenta es para cualquier persona que quiera soñar, emocionarse y pasar un buen rato.
Además se pueden aprender cosas casi que sin darte cuenta: de los caballeros de Malta, los enfrentamientos entre bizantinos y turcos, de geografía... Todo eso mientras sufres y celebras con la protagonista. Si no has leído El Capitán Tormenta o lo tienes arrinconado como "algo de cuando era niño", te animo a buscarlo, te puede sorprender lo moderna que puede ser una novela de hace más de cien años, y también lo mucho que se puede contar en tan pocas páginas.
