Es gibt Bücher über Geschichte, es gibt Bücher über Literatur – und dann gibt es Werke, die beides in außergewöhnlicher Weise verbinden. A Short History of the World in 50 Books von Dan Smith ist genau so ein Buch.

In fünfzig sorgfältig ausgewählten Kapiteln führt uns der Autor durch die geistige und kulturelle Entwicklung der Menschheit. Jedes Kapitel widmet sich einem Werk, das unsere Welt in besonderer Weise geprägt hat – von religiösen Schriften und philosophischen Abhandlungen über wissenschaftliche Durchbrüche bis hin zu Romanen, die gesellschaftliche Debatten ausgelöst haben.

Smith versteht es meisterhaft, historische Fakten mit packenden Hintergrundgeschichten zu verweben. Er erklärt nicht nur, wann und unter welchen Umständen diese Bücher entstanden, sondern auch, welche Wirkung sie auf ihre Zeit – und oft auch auf die Gegenwart – hatten.
