I’ve been hearing about Daniel Chavarría since I was a child. Back then, my sister read a lot, and on several occasions she had one of his books in her hands. It might have been Príapos or Joy the first work of his that I read, but fate decided it would be Allá ellos.
Synopsis: The novel is about a magical plant capable of forcing people to perform any kind of act, even against their will. In this way, several stories intertwine across Brazil, Spain, and the United States, all ultimately converging in Cuba. There, a pair of elite spies have the mission of overthrowing Fidel Castro and the socialist political system by using the active principle of this plant.

I thought Zé Bonitinho would be the protagonist of this story, since he was the first character introduced and described with such precise detail. Later I realized that this novel would be defined by that very characteristic. Every character that appeared had a role in the main story, but what fascinated me was how their lives were explored in depth, even when it wasn’t strictly relevant to the central plot.
It seems Chavarría had that magical touch to captivate the reader, since his language is clear and straightforward, like the instructions for an appliance. There’s no way to lose track of the narrative despite the flashbacks and the jumps between different time periods. No, there’s no time machine.
Some chapters really struck me, like when Jaime de Arnaiz kidnaps an entire family, and I truly thought he wouldn’t kill anyone in the process. Arnaiz is both protagonist and villain. The man is a fascist, but his principles are clear and inviolable. That’s precisely why I liked this character so much.
I also greatly enjoyed the portrayal of Cuban society and its characters, as Chavarría practically captured the way Cubans speak and act. He probably did the same with the characters and settings from the other nations involved in the novel, but I have no way of comparing, since I’ve never traveled abroad.
This book has it all: love, massacres in the name of democracy, humor, heroism, incest, caudillismo, and commando actions. A whole soup of emotions enough to make you forget you even own a smartphone.
In short, I declare myself a fervent admirer of Daniel Chavarría and his work. It’s still on my to-do list to consume the rest of his titles.

De Daniel Chavarría llevo escuchando desde que era niño. Mi hermana en aquella época leía mucho, y en varias ocasiones entre sus manos estaba algún libro de aquel autor. Pudo ser Príapos o Joy la primera obra qud leí de él, pero el destino quiso que fuera Allá ellos.
Sinopsis: La novela trata sobre una planta mágica capaz de obligar a la personas a realizar cualquier tipo de actos aún en contra de su voluntad. De esta manera, se entralazan varias historias que se producen entre Brasil, España y Estados Unidos, y que tienen como destino final a Cuba. Allí un par de espías de alta gama tendrá como misión derrocar a Fidel Castro y al sistema político socialista haciendo uso de principio activo de esta planta.
No creo que esta sinopsis sea tan exacta, pero si tengo que dar más detalles, ya no sería una sinopsis.
Creí que Zé Bonitinho sería el protagonista de esta historia, pues fue el primer personaje que nos presentaron, y que además fue descrito con un nivel de detalle muy preciso. Después me di cuenta de que esta novela se definiría por esa característica. Cada personaje que aparecía tenía su papel dentro de la historia principal, pero me fascinó que se profundizara en sus vidas, sin que ello fuera tan relevante para entender la línea principal.
Al parecer Chavarría tenía ese toque mágico para enganchar al lector, ya que su lenguaje es claro y limpio como las instrucciones de un electrodoméstico. No hay manera de que pierdas el hilo a pesar de los flashbacks y de los viajes entre distintas épocas. No, no hay ninguna máquina del tiempo.
Hay capítulos que me impactaron, como cuando Jaime de Arnaiz secuestra una familia entera y de verdad me hizo pensar que no mataría a nadie en el proceso. Arnaiz es protagonista y villano a la vez. El tipo es fascista, pero sus principios son claros e inviolables. Es precisamente por eso, que me gustó tanto este personaje.
También me gustó mucho la caracterización de la sociedad cubana y sus personajes, pues Chavarría prácticamente retrató la manera de decir y hacer de los cubanos. Probablemente también hizo lo mismo con los personajes y lugares del resto de las naciones involucradas en la novela, pero no tengo manera de comparar, pues no he viajado nunca.
Tenemos en este libro amor, masacres en nombre de la democracia, humor, heroísmo, incesto, caudillismo, y acciones de comando. Toda una sopa de emociones como para olvidarte de que tienes un smartphone.
En fin, que me declaro ferviente admirador de Daniel Chavarría y su obra. Es tarea pendiente para mí, consumir el resto de sus títulos.
