Faculty of Architecture and the Campus - Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas - Part 3

CiudadUniversitaria3_Collage.jpg

For days now, I have been about to tell you about the third and final part of my walk through the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas a little more than a month ago.

If you missed the first two parts of the tour, you can read it at A visit to Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas - Part 1 and Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas - The Plaza Cubierta and Rectory Square- Part 2.

At the end of the tour of the Plaza del Rectorado, we were in what is called No Man's Land at the back of the library and the set of central buildings.

CiudadUniversitaria3_1.jpg

From this point, besides the library building, you can see the back façade of the Concert Hall, with a mural of the plastic artist Mateo Manaure. I don't know if I have said it before, but this Venezuelan artist is the one with the most artwork in the whole area of the University City.

From there, we went to the University Campus with the idea of visiting the Faculty of Architecture.

CiudadUniversitaria3_2.jpg

We started to walk, and very close we could see from the outside the Library building of the Faculty of Engineering with its facade by the artist Alejandro Otero. It was being restored when we were there.

CiudadUniversitaria3_3.jpg

We went into one of the roofed corridors that run through the Engineering schools where there are stalls where you can buy used books, cheap copies, and much more, and even though the University was on vacation, there were some stalls open.

CiudadUniversitaria3_4.jpg

CiudadUniversitaria3_5.jpg

The long roofed corridors are one of the characteristics of the entire complex of the Ciudad Universitaria and some of them also have art interventions integrated.

CiudadUniversitaria3_6.jpg

CiudadUniversitaria3_7.jpg

After crossing the Engineering corridor we approached the place we wanted to visit, the Faculty of Architecture. The facade of this building is by the artist Alejandro Otero.

CiudadUniversitaria3_8.jpg

I had never entered the Faculty of Architecture at UCV and I was very excited because my mother studied there a lot of moons ago. When you enter the building, there is a large area. It has some murals, some of them by Mateo Manaure.

CiudadUniversitaria3_9.jpg

A panoramic view of the main floor of the building where we entered it.

CiudadUniversitaria3_11.jpg

High ceilings and always present elements that allow light to enter and give freshness to the spaces.

CiudadUniversitaria3_12.jpg

CiudadUniversitaria3_13.jpg

We went to the cafeteria area which was closed, but in the small adjacent garden, we saw a huge Coco de Mono tree like the ones we would later see in the Botanical Garden. We were also able to appreciate the external details of the windows of the building.

CiudadUniversitaria3_14.jpg

In this garden, there is also a model of a work that Jesús Soto, the Venezuelan master of Cinetismo, was going to make for the University City, but decided not to do in the end, since at that time this complex was a commission of the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez.

CiudadUniversitaria3_15.jpg

From the door of the cafeteria to the outside, which was closed, you can see the impressive concrete stands of the Olympic Stadium and the sculpture of Narvaez that is at the entrance of the stadium.

CiudadUniversitaria3_16.jpg

Also from that point, we saw some of the details of the design of the external stairs of the building.

CiudadUniversitaria3_17.jpg

CiudadUniversitaria3_18.jpg

Then we were in the area in front of the faculty auditorium, which was closed. But at the entrance, there is a concrete plaque with the signature of Carlos Raul Villanueva, the genius behind the conception and design of the Ciudad Universitaria.

CiudadUniversitaria3_20.jpg

CiudadUniversitaria3_21.jpg

Then we went to an area set aside for exhibitions within the faculty.

CiudadUniversitaria3_22.jpg

In this area, there are some works of the American sculptor Alexander Calder whose works are very present in the University City.

CiudadUniversitaria3_23.jpg

Here is a view of another mural. This one by the artist Victor Valera.

And we finished our visit to the Faculty of Architecture. So we left the building to go back to the central library building.

CiudadUniversitaria3_24.jpg

We didn't go out the way we came in, so we had a different angle view of the building.

CiudadUniversitaria3_25.jpg

We went back to the corridors and this time we took different ones. Notice the wavy detail on the roof of these.

CiudadUniversitaria3_26.jpg

We passed by the main building of the engineering faculty.

As we were walking back towards the library building, our guide asked a security guard at the entrance to the School of Sanitary Engineering if we could hurry inside and take a look around. So this wee visit was a bonus on the tour.

CiudadUniversitaria3_27.jpg

The inside of the building has an interior garden which gives it a very nice and fresh look.

CiudadUniversitaria3_30.jpg

CiudadUniversitaria3_31.jpg

In addition to the garden, I loved the stairs, the skylight, and the blocks of different shapes on the wall that create shadows in the interior, and at the same time let the light in and make the place very fresh.

In general, the enclosed spaces throughout the University City are very cool, because they are designed to allow air to circulate.

CiudadUniversitaria3_33.jpg

We returned to the outer corridors to continue to the Library building. In this hallway, you can also see that there are blackboards. During class time, it is common to see students discussing and trying to solve problems on them.

CiudadUniversitaria3_34.jpg

A view from the hallway to the building we had just visited.

We concluded our tour of the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, but then we had the chance to take a short walk through the Botanical Garden to close with a flourish. You can read about that visit at A walk through the Botanical Garden of Caracas.

And since today is Wednesday, this is also my post for this week's #wednesdaywalk challenge hosted by @tattoodjay in collaboration with #makemesmile hosted by @elizacheng.

Thank you for reading.

It is good to see the spaces clean and in good condition, it makes you want to stay there and enjoy the spaces as if it were a recreational park.

I can imagine the emotion you felt when you walked through the spaces where you mom was in her youth.

Thank you for taking me for a walk @coquicoin 😊

It was great to tour the university and of course, the architecture faculty. I recommend anyone to contact the Copred for a tour like the one we did. It's worth it.

And it is appreciated that they are putting some love into the University City. It was a great sadness that the facilities were so neglected and abandoned.

Abrazos!

It looks very concretey Super Eli and I can't believe I missed this!

It does look colourful though. Strangely enough many many schools were made from concrete here. An in the last couple of months hundreds yes hundreds of these schools have been closed because of problems with crumbling so safety fears!

So, I am glad you got home safe!

0.00004704 BEE

Hehe! Super Ed! Well, speaking of concrete, a few years ago one of the university's huge concrete-roofed corridors had problems and collapsed. And in some sections, they are now putting in some reinforcements. ;)
It would be a calamity if this work of architecture and art, a world heritage site, had the risk of falling down. I don't even want to think about it.

0E-8 BEE

A calamity indeed. I hope nobody was hurt in that collapse.
