I think that you should do things for your own self. People are unpredictable and sometimes they will act against your better judgment. So if the goal is to receive a reward, then it will be hard to guarantee it. But if your goal is to help people because you feel that's the right thing to do, you won't see it as a transaction and instead just as being part what makes you, you. Just like doing exercise, or hanging out on the mall every weekend.

I never expect anything in return, but I also expect that they take it for granted and accuse me of it. It's better not to help. My help is for selective people.
Also you are helping in your terms. For example, for many people, help means give them money. And I try not to do that, I help them, telling them how to get money. I help them giving them a book that talks about financial education. But I wont help how they expect me to help.
