It is never luck. It is always the result of work, in some cases, nepotism, in other cases, genuine appreciation for the content that you've produced.
If we were to look at the overwhelming number of posts, I would be interesting in seeing the average and median reward on hive posts, by word count.
Maybe that's a project I can look into getting the data for.

I agree that hard work, consistency, and sometimes connections or timing pays off. The blockchain does reward quality, but visibility mostly depends on engagement.
Looking into the average and median rewards by word count is a solid idea. That kind of data would actually help indicate certain type of content that tends to do well. If you ever go ahead with it, I’d really like to see what you find.
I'm being lazy today, on my laptop in bed. I have some data from earlier this year on my main computer. It shouldn't be too difficult to do a quick analysis.
I will do it at some point today and then publish it in a few days. I have a queue of posts already waiting to go, I always have too much to say :D !
