My parents did a rail trip across the US and some Americans on that had never been on a train. We took one from Providence to NYC and it was pretty slow. The trains are fairly good here and better in other parts of Europe. But then I saw @revisesociology write about people taking day trips by air as it's so cheap.

Yeah, I think if you had lots and lots of time, a rail trip in the US would be do-able, and I think there are some specialty sections/routes that they spend a lot of time on to make them less annoying. Like the one you likely took though it was still slow.
