I'm way behind schedule this morning because I had to break my regular weekday routine to do someone else's job for them. Don't you just love it when that happens? Anyway, as I mentioned last week, a little over a week ago @mrsbozz and I took a drive down to Radford Virginia to visit our niece at university and to watch her play softball with her team. Friday morning my wife and I got up a little early and we decided to take a short walk around the area where our hotel was. If you ever have to stay in Radford, I highly recommend the Highlander Hotel. It is part of the Hilton Tapestry collection, but it caters specifically to guests of the university.

It was a shorter walk than we took on Saturday morning, but it took us near some old buildings around the area. I would guess given the part of the country Radford is in, there is a lot of history in some of these buildings. You might not be able to see it really well in that first photo, but I was trying to capture the old stone building down the road a bit. Actually, given how images have been working on HIVE lately, I'll be lucky if you are even able to see what I am talking about!
They only had one game on Friday and it was an early afternoon game, so we took advantage of that to make a little run to the next town over called Christiansburg. Radford is pretty small, so if you want more shopping options and different places to eat, you have to hop over to Christiansburg or one of the other bigger towns in the area.
After we made a quick stop at a chain store called TJMaxx so our niece could find a dress for a banquet she had coming up, we found a used book store that @mrsbozz wanted to check out.

Old New River Books is located in a small town called Cambria, Virginia and it sits in an old building next to the Cambria Train Station. They had a ton of old books. Probably a lot of stuff that no one would ever care about, but you never know. @mrsbozz wasn't able to find anything that jumped out at her, so after a quick look around we eventually left to go find dinner.
I did notice a couple things that stuck out at me and I felt it would be a good idea to take a photo of them. Mainly the old paperback novels that they had on one of the racks. I've never heard of the book "Jungle She" but it seems enthralling, am I right?
Second, the archway that they decorated with old books was pretty cool too. I actually just stood looking at it for a while trying to understand the engineering of it all. Since there doesn't seem to be a lot of tension from the outside arches, I am guessing a lot of adhesive was involved, especially for those books across the top of the arch.

We found a local brew pup in the area called Bull and Bones that we decided to check out for dinner. It was kind of funny because although it was a brew pub, they only had one of their own beers on tap. They were hosting a "tap takeover", so they didn't have much of their own brew for us to choose from. Instead, I got this nice brown ale from another brewer, and my wife got a mango wheat beer that she really enjoyed.

We got some deep fried pickles to start off, but we had already half finished them before I realized I needed to get a photo.

I got chicken wings as my entree and although they were good, I don't think they were any better than the ones I have been making myself at home lately on the Weber Kettle grill. They were nice and meaty although they might look small in the photo above and they had decent flavor.
Our niece got the burger which she seemed to enjoy, and @mrsbozz got the chicken wrap with onion rings which when asked how it was she simply said "it's a chicken wrap". It's pretty rare we go somewhere that they really elevate that sort of thing. Which is too bad really.
After dinner, we dropped our niece off at her dorm to get some laundry done, then a bit later in the evening she called up so her and I could go get shakes from Cook Out. We took them back to the hotel and sat in our room and watched some of the NCAA basketball tournament before I drove her back to her dorm.
To be fair, she could have easily walked, it's not that far, but being the overprotective aunt and uncle we are, we felt better driving her over. As I took her back, the frat and sorority houses were alive with all kinds of shenanigans, and the local police had several people pulled over doing sobriety checks.
Ah, life in a college town!

These pictures are so captivating and attarcting. The library and the others are a good one. Sounds like a busy but meaningful trip, I guess. The walk and time with family is a very special moment and I am sure it will make the trip special also.
Thanks! We had a really nice time exploring some new areas!

What a warm and genuine post 😊
I really enjoyed how you turned a “regular” day, with delays and small interruptions, into a story full of interesting moments. That morning walk sounds lovely, and the hotel seems to have a special charm, especially with its connection to the university.
The bookstore visit was also a highlight 📚. Those places always feel magical, even if you don’t end up finding anything. And that book arch… such a creative idea! I can totally picture myself standing there for a while trying to figure out how it works too.
You also made me smile with the whole food part 😄. From the fried pickles to comparing the wings with your own (that says a lot, by the way). And the ending with milkshakes, college life, and your “protective uncle/aunt mode” was just perfect.
Posts like this are truly enjoyable because they feel real and unfiltered. Thanks for sharing this little piece of your trip and everyday life 🙌✨
