I wish tipping wasn't as big of a thing as it is here in the US. It has really gotten out of hand and it would just be better if costs were low enough that businesses could pay their employees a livable wage.

Yhp. And what’s really sad is how business are guilting customers into tipping when it’s their responsibility to pay them better. Like you pay your employees horseshit, but yeah, I’m the villain because I don’t want to pay more than my food costs.
As for how it became a thing in the US, I often wonder about it a lot. Waiting is not paid any better here in Ghana (it’s probably even worse here if anything) but tips are still considered a bonus and not really an expectation. Are the quality of service still comparable to the US though, I can’t say. I don’t think it is. But then again, I’m pretty sure it’s in the job description itself is to deliver quality service, so it baffles me how there would still be an expectation to be tipped for doing your job.
