My Garmin always shows me when there is an upcoming climb and shows something like "start climb". Did you upload your route to your Garmin? I always do. Maybe that could make a difference.
My cycling gear is just used by me. That does make a difference 😃

Unless I'm going to a nearby trail I'm always using the Garmin navigation indeed, it makes such a difference.
