Cycling through the green heart + cycling stats update

Last weekend we celebrated easter. This always comes with a lot of food. Eggs, chocolate, cake and so forth. We had a nice brunch with the family and had planned to visit my parents in law afterwards.
I know my mother in law and she always has enough to eat to feed an entire orphanage, so I decided to go there by bicycle. The rest of the family went by car. The route from my home to my parents in law goes through the so-called 'green heart' of the Netherlands.
The green heart is a rural and green area in the western part of the Netherlands, surrounded by major cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague. It consists of meadows and polders, farmland, small villages and nature and it's quite an open landscape.
The distance isn't that far (about 40 kilometers), but it was nice to be outside and getting some exercise on a the day. I also had quite a nice tailwind, so I probably didn't burn as much calories as I had consumed that day πŸ˜‚

I took my action cam with me and shot some footage during the ride, so you can get an impression of the area and see the great cycling infrastructure we have over here. It's such a privilege!

Most of the cycling paths are separated from the main roads. And in other places where cyclists and cars share the road, the cycling path is indicated with red tarmac.

Stats

Just like last year I've set myself the goal to ride at least 5000 kilometers. I'm tracking this with my Garmin and noticed I'm a bit behind my schedule. With over 25% of the year behind us I 'only have cycled 1181 kilometers so far, which is 23%. But I'm going to increase my kilometers over the next weeks. In the first place because we have daylight savings time now, so I can go for a ride in the evenings again. And secondly because I have to work towards a 200+ kilometer ride at the end of June πŸ˜€

The Garmin Connect is a great way of tracking your progress. You can set yourself goals and you can also 'subscribe' to the goals provided by Garmin. With these goals you can 'earn' badges. They have new challenges every month that allow you to earn these badges.
Although I don't really care about earning badges in general, it's cool to see how many I've earned in the past month:

image.png

These badges are earned for:
βœ… 20 hours of cycling om March
βœ… riding 40 kilometer in one weekend in March
βœ… 20 cycling activities in March
βœ… Cycle 675 kilometer in Jan-Feb-Mar
βœ… Cycle 200 kilometers in March

Do you track your progress, hours on the bike, kilometers, altitude or something like that? What is your goal and are you on schedule to reach those? What app or tool are you using to track your progress?

I’d love to hear your thoughts about my blog. Feel free to share your perspective in the comments.

SO FLAT THERE! Beautiful but flat. Reminds me of early spring in the Central Valley of California.

I use Connect primarily but also Strava as it has more segments and courses around me. Kinda fun to try for the KOMs. I'm going to see if I can get better than 3rd around the lake this morning. Connect has the Badges which are nifty for smaller goals and Strava has the challenges which are similar. Started wanting to hit 1000 miles this year but am likely going to try for 2500 now that I am almost to 500 for the year.

You can find me on Connect - JonathanFleming

Yeah, it is flat over here. And the stupid part is that I do like climbing too. I often take my bicycle with me on holidays abroad to do some climbing.

Although I have Strava and Connect, I keep my profiles private. I like a bit of anonymousy online πŸ˜…

But I'm sure there are Hivers that do have public accounts to connect with.

Do you also have a Strava account to follow? This is mine

Hi! πŸ˜…

Oh, that’s a paradise indeed, especially for laid‑back cyclists like me, and I loved seeing your new bike in action.

And I envy you. I've been Germany quite a few times to do some proper climbing; Monschau, Winterberg, the Eifel area. Lovely places to go cycling!

Yeah, right, nothing better than climbing and getting rewarded with some nice view on valley or something.
Yeah I would miss my 600 m in climb every other day :D

Is there actually a place in the Netherlands which can't reach with a bike? Or how much of the country has bike lane thing?

Excellent, my friend! That's great, the badges track your progress, and that's good. Let's get active on our bikes! Best regards.

I really like Garmin Connect, The Garmin was pretty expensive to buy but I enjoy it every week. We really are privileged with these roads, @nanixxx mentions the bad roads a lot and I see a lot of Brits as well, saying the roads are horrible and they have a lot of punctures because of it.

Not to jynx it but with commuting and all, do you have many punctures on a yearly basis?
I had one in the first weeks when I started and so far it's been the only one in 4000km

I use Strava more for tracking my progress than Garmin connect, I like it that it also tracks records on segments to fight my own times.

I'll be in Germany for a short holiday soon, there's some elevation there so I turned on the Climb Pro on my Garmin to see how this works and hopefully I have more elevation this summer in France (around Tours)

The badges on Garmin are cooler tho πŸ™‚ I like the names and colors

My Garmin is one of the best cycling gadgets I've bought, but indeed quite expensive. I'm a very bad navigator. I can get lost in my own neighborhood, so it really helps me find my way.
Climb pro is perfect too! I've used it a lot when cycling in the mountains. Do check before which info you want to see in the dashboards because you don't want to change that during your climb. It's cool that you can see the gradient in colors, the percentage, meters of elevation (both ahead and done).

Where do you go in Germany? I might have some tips for you. I've been cycling around Monschau, Winterberg and the Eiffel region.

Tours is beautiful too! Not a lot of climbing, but cycling along the Loire is beautiful. Last year we stayed around Blois (which is a lovely city to visit by the way).

Here are two posts from then:
