You should actually keep on breastfeeding the child till 2years but most mothers will always disagree.

The fact that many people do it and that it's very common doesn't necessarily mean it's ideal or medically advisable.
Most times it's always about some factors like work demands and lack of support that causes early weaning

Two years looks a lot but very small when you consider it takes a lot to get someone immunised

Also, yes, some children even self-wean before then in which case there are other alternatives too, just that they predispose the child to many GIT infections because at such a tender age, the gastrointestinal tract isn't well formed and the child's immunity is very low
