Hoy regresando a la casa de mis padres luego de un par de días de guardia en el negocio me llamó la atención ver unos brillantes frutos rojos bajando de unos árboles del jardín.

Como están por fuera del alambrado del lado de la calle me acerqué a mirar con más atención y tomar unas cuantas fotos para poder buscar su especie en Google Lens.

Según la búsqueda podría ser Paullinia elegans, conocida también como Ojo de Muñeca o falso guaraná y es una planta trepadora nativa de la familia Sapindaceae extendida por casi toda sudamérica, adaptada al clima tropical y subtropical.

Los frutos son de color rojo brillante, y según investigué en internet, tienen un sabor similar a la "Uva Chinche", aunque Claude me aclaró que no hay suficientes investigaciones fitoquimicas sobre la seguridad de su ingesta.

Según pude leer en el resumen ejecutivo que me preparó Claude esta enredadera es de la misma familia que la guaraná, y contiene compuestos bioactivos tales como saponinas triterpénicas, flavonoides, taninos, y alcaloides, lo que indica que tiene potencial uso medicinal como antioxidante, antiinflamatorio y antimicrobiano.

Aunque esta especie ha sido catalogada hace casi más de 200 años, al parecer no ha tenido la suficiente consideración en el ambiente científico porque no he encontrado estudios al respecto.

Sabemos que muchos de los medicamentos farmacológicos del mundo moderno tienen su origen en principios activos encontrados en la naturaleza, y esta modesta pero enérgica enredadera podría tener propiedades medicinales curativas al alcance de la mano, y de forma accesible.

Mientras tanto seguiré observando esta planta para ver si los animales comen sus frutos para poder saber si es seguro probarla.

Could it be a Paullinia elegans?

Today, returning to my parents' house after a couple of days on duty at the business, I was struck by the sight of some brilliant red fruits hanging down from some trees in the garden.

Since they were outside the fence on the street side, I went closer to look more carefully and take several photos so I could search for their species on Google Lens.

According to the search, it could be Paullinia elegans, also known as Doll's Eye or false guarana, and it's a climbing plant native to the Sapindaceae family, widespread throughout almost all of South America, adapted to tropical and subtropical climates.

The fruits are bright red in color, and according to my internet research, they have a flavor similar to "Uva Chinche" (Stink Bug Grape), although Claude clarified for me that there isn't sufficient phytochemical research on the safety of its consumption.
