What makes someone stay on Hive for years?

I woke up this morning with this question in my mind: What makes someone stay on Hive for years? I guess it was there because I have joined Hive since 2017, thus about 9 years ago and I am still present here. So for me the answer is a combination of finding like minded people in this ecosystem, being able to blog and chat about what I am interested in and also read other's insights and personal experiences, alongside with factoring rewards in the form of crypto. Instead of being yet another social platform, Hive chose the crypto way and I think that's an important factor in its evolution. But that doesn't limit to earning crypto rewards, but also developing apps and games using the blockchain technology. Owing assets and owning your content is what ultimate makes us (or at least me) continue my journey in this ecosystem.

Networking with like minded people

While crypto rewards are a nice incentive and something that pulled me initially, they are not enough to keep someone active for years. Markets go through cycles, prices rise and fall and there are moments when motivation naturally fades like we are experiencing right now. What keeps bringing me back is the networking and engagement with other like minded people. Over time I began to recognize familiar names in the comments, followed each other's journeys and achieved milestones together.

Being on the Hive blockchain almost feels like meeting friends at the favorite coffee shop every morning and get in touch. Some of us have been here for many years, others are newcomers just experimenting with this ecosystem, but both of us we create an environment where every engagement can lead to a new idea or a different perspective. This I find quite valuable and keeps me connected to this ecosystem, even if at times I myself gone missing for a bit. But I've always returned back and I hope to that in the future as well.

Discover, learn and earn in the same time

Another reason why I continue to enjoy Hive is that the ecosystem never stands still and grows, even if at low speeds like in this bear market. I see new applications being developed (mine is one of them https://hivepulse.app), new communities being created (New communities on Hive deserve more attention - July 2026), new games popping up and project capturing our attention and time (Scrobble Life).

Lately, building HivePulse has made me realize just how much data and opportunity exist on the blockchain. Every new feature I implement gives me another reason to explore Hive from a different angle and sparks new ideas. The fact that anyone can build on top of this open blockchain means innovation doesn't depend on a single person or even requires a company behind (AI vibe coding is the new reality). Today someone launches a new community, tomorrow another developer releases a useful tool or app and suddenly there is something fresh to discover. There is a lot happening in this ecosystem and I think that the next bull cycle will find us in a better spot.

Long-term purpose and strategy

We are in a bear market and the Hive price was hit pretty hard by it and also by its own context where there is a lack of new users and activity. About tokenomics I don't know what to say more, but something is not good there as well. So what can we do? Well, these are the times for bold moves that can make a true difference in the future so in my case that translated by selling $7,000 HBD and exchanging those in about 140,000 Hive and power them app. For me this changed things into a long strategy and in the same time gave me the motivation to keep at it and do my best until the next bull run. It has a lot of risk, but I was willing to take it. Now it is mostly about the Hive ecosystem activity and the projects from here to prove their worth going further.

When I wonder and ask myself at times about what made me stay on Hive for years, I realize there are multiple factors in the mix. It is the combination of networking, the freedom to build and create, the ownership of both content and assets and the opportunity to build a financial future. The blockchain provides the ecosystem, but the people give it activity and purpose. If someone joins Hive only to chase rewards, they may eventually leave when the market becomes difficult. But if they find a community, establish real connections and discover a place where you just feel good, they may find themselves still here many years later, just as I have. But I am still seeking to strike it rich 😆
