Although this wasn't our first camping trip of the year, there was something about it that kind of made it feel that way. Maybe it was the fact that we stayed three nights at the campground instead of two. Then again, it might have been the fact that school is officially out for the Summer and @mrsbozz doesn't have to step foot back in the building until August.
I think mostly, it was the fact that @diamonddave and his wife were able to come on this trip with us. Due to his health issues last year, this is the first time that the four of us have been able to spend some time around the campfire together, and there was something "right" about it.
Lakeport State Park sits right on the shores of Lake Huron in Michigan just north of Port Huron. This is only the second time we have visited this park, but there is definitely a lot to do and see in the area. Then again, you might prefer to just sit at your campsite and watch the Great Lakes freighters go by.
The only problem with the sites right on the water is sometimes the wind can get quite heavy and in the case of this past weekend even though we were a couple of roads away from the shore, it was still pretty chilly. @mrsbozz had a winter coat on most of the time we were outside. I thought it was quite nice, though I do like it just a bit warmer out. I'm not a fan of the 90 degree days they are calling for later this week.
When we arrived on Thursday afternoon, the campground was pretty empty. I guess that's probably a relative term. As you can see from the photo above, there were plenty of people there, but I wouldn't consider it "packed". However, by Friday night, the campground had totally filled in and I don't think there were more than a handful of empty sites in the place.
One of the unique things about Lakeport State Park is the fact that it has a camp store near the water in the section where our site was. They sell things like ice, wood, and ice cream which are always handy to have when you are camping. We didn't visit the store since we brought our own wood and ice, but it took a lot of willpower to resist the temptation to get some ice cream!
If you have ever done this style of camping, you know that food is a big part of the deal. Whether you are using one of those new fangled griddles like I have been lately, a grill, or cooking over the open fire, there are always a lot of really great smells floating around the campground. Since I will be sharing a lot of food photos, I am going to leave this post off the worldmappin map, they apparently frown on that and it's part of the reason I have been silently boycotting them.
Of course, along with the regular bacon for me, I also have to cook up some turkey bacon for @mrsbozz. It's actually not that bad flavorwise, but I really don't think it's that much healthier for you. She just prefers it over pork I guess. Weekends are usually one of the only times I have more than a bowl of cereal for breakfast.
As I said before, we've been using the griddle quite a bit for our meals when we are camping. I can run it right off the gas supply for the trailer and not having to load up the grill allows me to throw more wood in the back of the truck for campfires. The first night camping we had asparagus and turkey reuben sandwiches on the griddle. I used traditional rye bread for mine, but my wife opted for a low carb tortilla.
Friday night we had chicken philly sandwiches for dinner which I didn't take photos of, but on Saturday night we had this delicious tortellini, sausage, and vegetable dish that I threw together on the flat top. It was probably one of the best things we ate all weekend and the smells were amazing!
We made a couple excursions while we were camping, but I also spent some time just sitting at our campsite reading this new book. It's been pretty good so far and I will likely write a post about it when I finish it up.
I think most everyone knows, camping isn't really camping unless you spend some time around the campfire. We usually had the fire roaring by about 6 PM each night and we stayed up until around 10:00 or 11:00 drinking, talking, and listening to music (at a respectable level). It was a really great kick off to the summer season and I am already looking forward to our next trip in a couple of weeks.
Beautiful camping park that is near the lake. It's nice that there is also a store where campers can buy some necessities including ice cream. Lol... The food all look appetizing; camping and good food go together well. Your camping trips always look exciting especially with a scenic view.
Thanks! We try to pick some of the better spots, but it gets hard as they fill up quite quickly. I had to reserve this one six months in advance just to make sure I could get into the park. I've heard people lately saying they can't get in anywhere in the state.
That's basically an ideal weekend, these days I just really crave for spending such weekends, the peace and serenity in your captures just indicates the fact that you enjoyed everything thoroughly!
Thanks! I actually forgot to mention the part about the loud people next to us, but it wasn't too big of a deal. There was still plenty of time to relax!
You actually can't make me feel through such serene pictures that there was an noice! π

Sounds like a nice camping trip! That is a very nice setup to have a store in the camping area! The times I went camping in Eastern Washington the closest store was like 10 miles away :)
Also, the picture of a lake where you cannot see the other shore and instead see a giant ship on the horizon is very impressive! Looks more like an ocean or a sea than a lake.
It's definitely a smart play on their part and they jack the prices up enough that they make a profit on it while people enjoy the convenience. The Great Lakes are pretty crazy like that. Where we were Canada actually isn't too far away, but there are parts of the lakes on either side where you can't see anything but water and the horizon.
Enjoy your camping. Looks like you are in your element when it comes to cooking.
Thanks, I am a bit dangerous when it comes to cooking. My wife is much better than me!
Iβve only gone camping a few times with my fam, but I totally get what you mean about the campfire vibes.
It's a very therapeutic thing!

Do they really? Thanks for the heads up, mind you I think I have post with a lot of pics then I would post in foodies community.
As for the ice cream, I bet if it was 90 degree weather you would have been tempted lol!
I was tempted anyway, but not enough to walk down there to get it. It's empty calories after all.... Yeah, if you go back and look at my last post in Worldmappin, you will see the comments they made. I will respect their opinion even though I don't agree with their reasoning and not post in there anymore. I did pull my vote from their proposal and I was going to pull my witness vote too, but they have it tied to a specific user (detlev), and I don't have a beef with him, so I decided to leave it for now.

That's great β¨ Always be happy π Have a great day π
Looks like it was a great weekend out in nature. The campfire is always the best part of any camping trip I have to agree. What kind of drinks did you enjoy? Any good bourbon?
I'm not a huge fan of turkey bacon either, it just isn't the same even though it is healthier. But those chicken Phillies looked good. Glad you guys had a chance to enjoy a long weekend, are you doing the same this upcoming one by taking Friday off?
No this weekend we are heading to watch my niece play softball I think. It might change though. Our next planned camping trip is in a couple of weeks. The campfire was great, but I never have enough wood. I finished a bottle of Four Roses and then I bought another bottle of Michter's Bourbon and started that. They are both a couple of my favorites.
Looks like a great trip the blackstone at camp is next level! We are in the UP this week getting some time in the woods too.
That is awesome! Watch out for ticks! We are only making it up to the UP once this Summer. I'm hoping to hit a trail up there I have read about East of the bridge. I've never explored that area too much. We usually go west of I-75.
Man, working out that Blackstone! Tortellini looks amazing!
Thanks! It's such a handy tool. It has definitely changed the way we eat when we camp!
Wow, I love vacations, and that grill you gat going on there' heavens, that really looks yummy, would love to travel and spend my weekend like this someday.
It's a really good time. We are lucky to have a lot of parks and stuff where you can visit like this.
I would love to visit one day, hopefully βΊοΈ
