It's been hammered into us from childhood that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. While that sounds good in theory, in practice, life is hectic and doesn't always leave wiggle room for certain adages.
On the other hand, there is something about the weekend where things slow down and we trade in our bowl of cereal, granola bar, or pop tart for something with a little more sustenance. It's no surprise that the folks in the UK have made a full English Breakfast such a special thing. There is something almost ceremonial about it.
I'd put money on the fact that any first time Blackstone owner, or potential Blackstone owner has dreamed more than once about the first breakfast they are going to cook on their griddle. It is almost a right of passage when you own one of these things.
The fact is, these griddles were practically made for breakfast. It wasn't that long ago I was juggling pots and pans around on my small camping cook top. Crowding bacon in a 8" cast iron pan, and hoping the wind didn't blow out the flame on my hard boiled eggs before the water started to boil.
No more!
Okay, the wind might still be a bit of an issue, but even with the small 22" size, this Blackstone has so much real estate for me to cook a proper breakfast.
Not a full English Breakfast, but it was still something special...
Friday morning we started with some hash browns and pork breakfast sausages from the store. I threw the hash browns on first because I wanted to get them as crispy as possible.
The sausages you have to be careful with. If you cook them too hot, they will end up burned on the outside and raw on the inside. Slow and steady wins the race here. While the Blackstone cook top can get up to 700 degrees or so if you crank it all the way up, it's pretty rare that you actually have it that high unless you are seasoning it, or trying to get a good sear on a steak or smash burger.
It didn't take long for the hash browns to start to crisp around the edges. They still had a ways to go though. I really need to invest in a press so that they can get more contact with the griddle surface.
With the sausages pretty much done, I moved them over to the other side and started cooking the veggies for @mrsbozz's scrambled eggs.
Looking good so far!
After the veggies were nice and soft, I added the egg whites that my wife enjoys. Personally, I prefer proper eggs (as you will see in a second), but she likes the egg whites that you can buy in a carton at Costco.
Clearly I need to work on my pour. I don't think the griddle was quite level, so things got a little messy. The key is, if you keep moving things around, it won't stick as badly. Plus if you have a good base seasoning, you are pretty golden anyway.
I was so focused on my first breakfast cook with my Blackstone, that I forgot to put seasoning on the scrambled eggs for @mrsbozz. Thankfully, I remembered to throw some Weber's garlic parm seasoning on mine.
Tasty right?!
Just look at those hash browns! I'd actually prefer them a little more crispy, but they were still quite delicious.
I usually flip my eggs at least once to make sure the yolk is cooked enough and less likely to give me salmonella. Unfortunately, that usually means I end up breaking one or more of the yolks. AS you can see, that's what happened with the top one. It was still delicious!
What a great way to start the day!
As happy as I was with Friday mornings breakfast, I was still eager to get some bacon down on this bad boy and see how that turned out. As I mentioned before, it has always been a pain in the past to cook bacon due to the restricted space in my cookware.
That was all about to change....
First, we thought it might be a good idea to hard boil some eggs for breakfast burritos to eat on our drive home Sunday. Unfortunately, it didn't work out well for me. After half an hour with the burner on full, the water still wasn't boiling.
I have seen people do this before, so I am not sure what I was doing wrong. I might need to research it. If you noticed, one of my mistakes was definitely having the handle of the pot over the cook top. I didn't get burned, but that handle was pretty warm when I moved the pot to a proper stove top.
Having given up on the hard boiled eggs, I moved on to the bacon. It was amazing. I was able to put it all down with plenty of room to spare. I was even able to get hash browns going again on the other side of the griddle.
I prefer my bacon with a little bit of chew to it and this turned out perfectly. It was absolutely delicious. It did leave a ton of grease on the cook top, but I scraped most of that into the grease tray at the back of the griddle.
What was left I wiped up with a paper towel and spread around the rest of the griddle for further seasoning.
Scrambled egg whites again for @mrsbozz
And soft or sunny side up eggs again for me. Two days in a row I forgot to put seasoning on the scrambled eggs. I'll do better next trip, I promise!
The hash browns were looking nice and crispy again as well.
I'm really happy with the way breakfast turned out on the Blackstone. I can see why so many people have these for camping. When we were walking around the campground, it was pretty much every other lot the campers has one of these setup outside their trailer or tent.
I ended up storing ours in our locked truck each night just to be safe. I don't really expect anyone would steal it, but these days, you just never know.
We have another camping trip scheduled soon and I am really looking forward to putting the griddle through it's paces again. Maybe one of these times I will get really brave and try pancakes. I have heard you need the proper ratio of heat and fat for them to not stick.
I had one more cook (dinner) with my Blackstone on this past trip that I will be sharing in post next week. I hope you stop by to check it out! Meanwhile, have a great weekend, I hope you slow down enough to enjoy a proper breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day you know!
breakky is the most important meal of the day but not with unhealthy food like sausages
Ah, you gotta have a little protein every now and then. Plus, we deserves some small joys in life. I don't feel too bad since I only eat like this on the weekends.
Nothing quite as terrific as outdoor cooking that's for sure. The hash browns and bacon look absolutely scrumptious from my view and I'm sure it tastes even better. The blackstone has to be the most effective way of enjoying outdoor activities like camping. Glad you had fun with it.
It's definitely been a game changer for us so far. I can't wait to really put it through its paces this season. I can see a lot of great meals being put together on that griddle!
haha man, you are really enjoying that grill. Money very well spent.
Yeah, it has been really great so far!
Great work putting the Blackstone to work! You cant beat outdoor cooking. I cant imagine what you might have done wrong with the boiled eggs though. Maybe not hot enough somehow?
I'm wondering if it wasn't hot enough or maybe the pot was too thick on the bottom. I see some people put foil in between the griddle and the base to block the wind from impacting the flame. I might need to try that.
Breakfast of champions!!
For sure!
oh that looks tasty 😆 I see that was a sadrosa barbecue 😋
Thank you!
I can't wait to watch more culinary adventures here! The new house we're moving into has my first ever gas range and double ovens. I'm so excited to experiment and taken my cooking and baking game to a new level.
That sounds pretty amazing! Best of luck on your move! I can't wait to see what you whip up!
Always great when a plan comes together buying equipment you happy with, breakfast is the most delicious meal of the day depending on what you decide to make. Full English breakfast rules!
The beans at breakfast thing always throws me. I see that as more of a lunch or dinner thing. Mostly during cookouts. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that there is a time and place for them :)
OK no beans, tomato, mushroom, bacon, sausage and all other tasty things, irresistible once smell wafts your way when you not the chef... I do like the look of your cooker!

It looks like that grill is working overtime, which is awesome.
It all looks pretty good although I'm curious about those egg whites in a carton. We have Costco here too although I've not seen them although, addmitedly I've not looked. They just pour out of the carton?
Yeah, they just pour out of the carton. You get like six of them in a box. You can use them for anything you would regularly use eggs for. Unless you specifically need the yolk.
Seems legit, and hand for those who don't want the yolks. I hope they never come up with bacon in a carton though, I prefer the real thing.

That looks really convenient for camping, although I haven't done much camping the for a few years since the kids have grown up. Looks like fun!
Yeah, it works perfectly! I am really loving it so far. It's heavy and takes up a bit of space, but totally worth it!
