Good for us

There are many things that can be improved in today’s world. I believe almost everything can be improved, because the truth is we need it. At this pace, soon there will be nothing left to improve—only to worsen.

I understand that the Environment is vital for our survival as a species, so on my wish list I would like to see much more control over what we humans produce that causes environmental pollution. Energy production is one of the most polluting sectors, so limiting its use would be ideal.

For that, there is one small thing we could improve: the cost of producing clean energy. Paradoxically, what is good for us is more expensive to produce, while what harms us turns out to be cheaper. The truth is, I wanted to talk in this post about improving the cost of renewable energy production, but as I kept writing I realized it is much better to focus on making what brings us well-being much cheaper, and making what makes us sick and destroys us much more expensive. It’s still just one thing to improve, so I didn’t cheat.

Imagine, for example, if a pack of cigarettes cost 2,000 dollars. Surely very few people could afford this luxury, which, moreover, is known to kill us slowly. Or on the contrary, if the highest-quality fruits could be found in the market at ridiculous prices that made us feel as if they were being given away.

Over time, it is very likely that life expectancy would skyrocket, but more than living longer, we would achieve living better, since our quality of life would also be high. I can already see diseases like cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease decreasing significantly.

So this is probably the reason why in reality this does not happen: to keep us sick, dependent on medicines that are not free, but also bought and generate profits.
