Do you think that was on purpose or someone not knowing this? How would you try to avoid it in the future? I mean this advice probably also goes for coin collecting :)

I think it was someone who didn't know any better. I had it tested with an XRF gun to find out, but I was too late because life happened, and I delayed.
For coins, bars and rounds, I have a Sigma that tests gold, silver and platinum for me.
