I think given the risk of having the money lent not get paid back to you is one of the main reasons for why people would rather keep the money than give it out. It does look similar to investing too, whereby I'm lending my money to this project and "hope" they pay in back in the future and then some :)

True and in my time I lent money and got it back, but there are cases also when I didn't get them back and ended up giving up on those. It is a riskier "business" that we might think, even if lending to friends.
