Yep, the smaller the account, the bigger the discrepancy between author and curation rewards. Those curation rewards will grow as your account grows. I'm not satisfied by mine either, there is a lot of room for improvement.
Also, if you had (much of) your stake delegated, that reduced your curation rewards.
