President Trump's administration just dropped nearly $1 billion in taxpayer money to halt two major offshore wind projects. The agreement was finalized this week, leaving many confused, especially since America's biggest wind farm began feeding power into the grid the very next day.
On Monday, the Interior Department cut a groundbreaking deal with French energy company TotalEnergies. The firm held leases for two proposed wind farms, one off New York and another near North Carolina. The government basically refunded the roughly $1 billion the firm had spent on those leases. In exchange, TotalEnergies agreed to walk away and sink the money into oil and gas projects instead, including a liquefied natural gas terminal in Texas and platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.
This aligns with the administration's strategy to curb renewables and prioritize fossil fuels. Backers praise it as a boost for conventional energy jobs, while critics decry it as an expensive retreat amid surging clean energy momentum.
The real twist? As the ink dried on this deal, Rhode Island's enormous Revolution Wind farm came online, delivering electricity to homes and businesses. It's larger than the canceled projects and it survived earlier attempts to shut it down.
