Small Shops Hit Hard

Small business owners are catching it from all sides right now. Tariffs have been jacking up costs for months, and now oil prices are climbing fast after fresh trouble in the Middle East. Many worry they might not make it through without raising prices or cutting back big time.

It all started building last year when new import fees kicked in on goods from China, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. Small outfits felt it first because they buy in smaller batches and lack the muscle to negotiate better deals. Supply chains got issues, and every extra dollar on parts or materials ate into slim profits.

Oil jumped past $100 a barrel in no time, pushing gas and shipping costs higher across the board. Truck deliveries now cost more, and anything moved by sea feels the pinch too. Owners who already stretched thin from tariffs say this double hit could force them to delay hires or even close doors.

One thing stands out: bigger companies can ride out the storm for a while by eating some costs. Small ones? Not so much. They serve local communities and create neighborhood jobs. If they struggle, everyone feels it through higher prices at the store or fewer services nearby.
