For the first time ever, clean sources like solar and wind have pushed past coal to become the top way we power our lives. This happened in the first six months of 2025, and it's a game-changer.
The news comes from Ember, a group that tracks energy trends worldwide. They crunched the numbers and found renewables pumped out 5,072 terawatt-hours of electricity from January to June, that's enough juice for millions of homes and cities. Coal trailed behind at 4,896 terawatt-hours, down a bit from last year.
Solar took the lead, rising 29% and meeting the majority of the increased demand as our gadgets and electric vehicles consume more power. Wind chipped in with a solid 7% boost. It's hard to grasp how fast these sun-and-breeze machines have grown from backyard experiments to global champions.
Coal plants belch out tons of CO2, fueling the heat waves and storms we're all too familiar with. Renewables cut that mess, keeping the air cleaner and bills lower in the long run. But it's not all smooth sailing. China and India drove this win. China alone added more solar and wind than everywhere else combined, even trimming its fossil use by 2%. Over there, leaders poured cash into panels and turbines, turning vast deserts and fields into energy farms.
It's heartening to see places racing ahead on green tech; makes you wonder why we can't all jump in like that. On the other hand, richer spots like the US and parts of Europe leaned harder on coal and gas this year. In the US, demand outran clean growth, bumping coal up 17%. Weak winds and dry rivers didn't help in Europe either. Still, experts say this milestone shows we can meet rising needs without dirty backups if we keep investing.
This shift to renewables feels like a quiet revolution, one panel at a time. As AI and electric technologies drive up demand, it demonstrates that we can fuel progress without polluting the atmosphere.
