Gas Prices Jump – Your Extra Tax Refund Could Disappear

Gas prices have surged fast since the trouble started with Iran at the end of February. The conflict kicked off around February 28 when U.S. and Israeli forces stepped in. Oil shipping got blocked in a major Middle East route, and that sent fuel costs climbing in the US.

Before all this, regular gas sat around $3 or less in many spots. Now the average sits near $3.90 a gallon, up nearly a dollar in just a few weeks. Families with two cars are already noticing $20 to $40 more each week just to fill the tank. At the same time, the big tax law Trump signed in 2025 is kicking in.

Most households are looking at about $750 extra back this year compared to last. But new numbers from economists show the higher gas bills might eat up almost all of that extra money. Prolonged high prices could force the average household to drop $700+ on fuel alone, plus extras for food and oil-dependent items.

It’s the kind of thing that hits everyday drivers and working parents hardest. The White House says the disruptions should be short, but no one knows for sure yet how long this will drag on.
