Automakers roll out new US EVs amid sales slump

Car companies just rolled out some fresh electric vehicles for American buyers. At the New York Auto Show this week, major players showed off models designed to get more people behind the wheel of an EV. Sales have slowed down lately, but these automakers say they’re not hitting the brakes.

Kia is bringing its lower-priced EV3 to the U.S. later this year. The small crossover comes in five trim levels, with choices for single or dual motors and different battery sizes. It’s aimed at folks who want an electric car without the high price tag.

The timing feels bold. New EV sales fell around 28 percent in the first three months of 2026 compared to last year. That drop came after the federal $7,500 tax credit ended last fall, making sticker prices sting a bit more for many buyers. Overall, EVs made up just under 6 percent of new car sales in early 2026.

It’s surprising because it shows these companies are still pushing forward instead of waiting for demand to bounce back. It’s exciting to think about how more affordable and family-friendly options could finally make electric driving feel normal for regular families, not just early adopters. Will these new models turn things around? Time will tell, but one thing is clear, the electric road ahead is still being built, one unveiling at a time.
