I am somewhat on a roll! Just one after my first movie in a year, I managed to catch another one, on a plane! And the movie I watched was The Devil Wears Prada 2!
I remembered watching the first edition many many years ago, and though my recollection was patchy, I have heard good reviews about this second edition, I went for this one among the long list of movies in the in flight entertainment.
The Good
I didn't know what exactly to expect but it turned out to be a lot about friendships and betrayal. Which was something I feel everyone can relate in our years of living. It's always heartwarming to have good buddies who will stick with us during tough times, and it's disappointing and shocking to be betrayed by people close to us, especially in a complicated where people sometimes prioritised their personal interest over everything else.
Another theme which I particularly liked was how it revolved about jobs, retrenchments, merger and acquisitions, and in this era where we see all the AI news and retrenchments across companies one after another, I feel most viewers could relate to in one way or another. The AI disruption in the workplace is so real and I feel that the movie accurately captured the anxiety of the workers as the ordinary people had to find ways to navigate this uncertain job environment.
The Bad
No movie is perfect, so while I really appreciated the relatability of the movie, I found myself feeling bored during the first hour of the movie. The storytelling just felt like it was not going anywhere as different characters just went through with the daily lives, which was not very exciting.
I guess in a way, I just persevered and continued watching on (since I was on the plane anyway), and fortunately, the drama started to kick in, where friendships were put to the test, and the betrayal started happening, and it created a big messy relationship among all the key characters.
If I would end off with another positive comment for the movie, I thought the acting of the cast were pretty impressive. And I think it saved the movie from a potential flop, especially if the viewers could not relate to the themes portrayed in the movie. So all in all, I did enjoy the movie and the acting from the cast and I felt this deserved an almost excellent rating!
Let me know if you have watched or what you thought about the movie?
