Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their Mississippi hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.
It's amazing to see new movies truly live up to the hype surrounding them. Upon hearing about "Sinners" I was not interested at all, I kept seeing movie poster promotion everywhere I went for this movie, the front cover just seemed like it was going to end up an action thriller but portray itself as a horror movie as so many do. I still wouldn't necessarily consider it a "horror" movie, but I can see why it fits into this genre.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners completely lived up to my own personal movie expectations. I did not go into the movie ever expecting it to be as wonderful as it was, but that is what one always wants. I love nothing better than a well-put together unique storyline when it comes to movies. The hype this movie has generated was deserved.
Sinners lived up to every expectation. The story follows two gangster brothers "Smoke" & "Stack", both characters played by Michael B. Jordan returning home to Mississippi where they grew up to forge out their next money making business plan, opening a "Juke Joint".
I love nothing more than a well-told story when it comes to movies and Sinners pulls you into the plot from the first visual shot of the twins together. Immediately, you are immersed within the world of the 1930's and the story grows from there. There are many jazz/blues inspired themes within the movie which are deliberate for the plot line, which I didn't quite realise at first. Everything is deliberate with this movie!
The blues music does more than just complements the story it elevates it to a whole new level, as the music plays and the scenes unfold it takes centre stage. The lyrics intertwined with the story, incredibly well directed. I am not usually a fan of musical numbers but by the end of this movie I had most of the songs stuck in my head with their catchy numbers.
This movie will and most likely has redefined a genre of what a film should be, not often does a film come along out of nowhere and not only entertain but linger within your mind post-credits. I did a lot of googling that night to understand the movie more as to why certain things happened and they all made perfect sense upon realisation. This movie will definitely require a second watch sometime in the future and I will thoroughly enjoy every minute of it, picking up more minute details I missed the first time round.
Overall, I loved Sinners. I had no complaints with any part of the movie, I believe it's the best movie this year so far and will most likely remain. 10/10 in my books and a highly recommended to all. This is my first movie review and I tried to remain spoiler free, I know it is not the best review and I hope to improve over time with my writing, thanks for popping in and reading my review!
This movie really deserves all the praise and I'm glad that I went to watch it in the Cinema. It's a shame they don't often make big budget movies like this that much anymore.
Agreed It's a big shame but hopefully this will go on to inspire more directors to try approach their movies in a similar way!
It’s wonderful to find a new movie that exceeds your expectations and makes you want to watch it again to catch more of these details.
I am looking for one like this that I enjoy, Long time ago since I enjoyed a movie like that.
Definitely it was a great watch! Not seen a movie that met expectations in a long long time
