A visit to the Church of the Divine Shepherdess in Santa Clara | [EN/ES]

Hello Hive travelers!

Interestingly, as I sit down to write these words, I realize something I'd never considered before.

As has generally been the case in every town founded in the 17th century, and earlier of course, churches were built around its main square, many of which have stood the test of time in one way or another.

And here's what I found curious: in my city, Santa Clara, the four main Catholic churches, and the oldest ones at that, are located practically at the cardinal points in relation to the central plaza, now called Leoncio Vidal Park.

Of these four churches, one stands out as the most unassuming, at least to someone just approaching the plaza where it's located. We're talking about the Church of La Divina Pastora, nestled about four blocks from the city center.

Although its walls have been painted on various occasions, note the current state of its exterior.

This park has another unique fact that many people, even the locals, are unaware of. Its former name was Parque 20 de Mayo (May 20th Park). Unfortunately, I don't know the origin of the name, as there is little information available about it.

Today, the plaza is known as Parque La Pastora (La Pastora Park), and you can see the imposing statue that stands here, welcoming visitors at one of its entrances.

This statue pays homage to Miguel Jerónimo Gutiérrez Hurtado de Mendoza, who served as president of the Governing Board and vice president of the Cuban House of Representatives in the 19th century. Beneath this monument, it is known that a lead box was deposited containing several copies of local newspapers, coins from the island, and a copy of the minutes approving its construction.

Sadly, one can see in one of its side views how vandalism has fractured one of the bas-reliefs in the first-class white Carrara marble that gives it an admirable perpetuity over time.

Called at the time, Parish of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of the Good Shepherd, Church of the Divine Shepherdess or simply Church of the Shepherdess, despite being the humblest as I mentioned, it has always been one of the most significant in the city since its construction was approved in 1793.

When we crossed the threshold of its large door, we were impressed by the simple interior view, which evoked something uncommon in the Catholic churches I have visited before.

Without opulence, its metal sheet roof evokes a nostalgia for the typical woodwork of this type of construction.

From inside, you can access the parish where the priest who cares for the church lives.

Its inner courtyard reminds us of when, in earlier years, it had a designated area for women, something that has thankfully faded away over time.

Its central stained-glass window, viewed from the inside, is pleasing because of its colors, something that, unfortunately, is not perceived from the outside.

As in almost all churches in our country, images that evoke the saints proliferate and here I share them with you.

In front of one of the side altars, see how simple the place is designated for the candles that parishioners offer to accompany their prayers.

The high ceilings and large windows offer a welcome climate in our warm country.

A small space for the musicians who accompany the singing during Mass, it also stands out for its modesty.

Curiosamente, en este minuto en que me siento a redactar estas letras, me percato de algo sobre lo cual nunca había pensado.

Como ha sucedido generalmente en toda villa fundada en el siglo XVII, y en fechas anteriores por supuesto, alrededor de su plaza principal se construyeron iglesias que, en muchos de los casos, trascienden en el tiempo de un modo u otro.

Y he aquí lo que me resultó curioso, en mi ciudad, Santa Clara, las cuatro principales iglesias católicas, y las más antiguas por demás, se encuentran ubicadas prácticamente en virtud de los puntos cardinales en relación a la plaza central, ahora llamada Parque Leoncio Vidal.

De estas cuatro iglesias, hay una que destaca por ser la más humilde, al menos a la vista de quien apenas se aproxime a la plaza donde está ubicada. Hablamos de la Iglesia de La Divina Pastora, enclavada a unas cuatro cuadras del centro urbano.

Si bien sus paredes han sido pintadas en disímiles ocasiones, nótese el estado actual de sus exteriores.

Este parque tiene otro dato singular que muchos desconocen, incluso los propios vecinos. Es el nombre que una vez tuvo, Parque 20 de mayo, el origen del nombre lo desconozco pues lamentablemente hay pocos datos sobre ello.

Hoy día, se conoce la plaza como el Parque La Pastora, y vean cómo se yergue acá una estatua imponente que da la bienvenida al transeúnte por una de sus entradas.

Esta estatua rinde homenaje a Miguel Jerónimo Gutiérrez Hurtado de Mendoza, quien fuere presidente de la Junta de Gobierno y Vicepresidente de la Cámara de Representantes de Cuba en el siglo XIX. Debajo de este monumento, se conoce hay depositada una caja de plomo donde encerraron varios ejemplares de periódicos locales, monedas de la isla y una copia del acta relativa a la aprobación de su construcción.

Tristemente, se puede apreciar en una de sus vistas laterales cómo el vandalismo ha fracturado uno de los bajorrelieves en el mármol blanco de Carrara de primera clase que le confiere una perpetuidad en el tiempo digna de admiración.

Llamada en su momento, Parroquia Santísima Virgen Madre del Buen Pastor, Iglesia La Divina Pastora o sencillamente Iglesia de La Pastora, a pesar de ser la más humilde como les comenté, ha sido siempre una de las más significativas de la ciudad desde su construcción aprobada en 1793.

Cuando cruzamos el umbral de su gran puerta, nos impresiona la vista interior tan sencilla y que nos evoca algo no común en las iglesias católicas que he visitado anteriormente.

Sin opulencias, su techo de planchas de metal nos provoca la nostalgia de extrañar las maderas típicas de este tipo de construcciones.

Desde su interior se puede acceder a la parroquia donde reside el padre que cuida la iglesia.

Su patio interior nos recuerda cuando, en años anteriores, tenía un sitio único para las féminas, algo que por suerte se ha diluido en el tiempo.

Su vitral central, visto desde dentro, resulta agradable por sus colores, algo que, desde el exterior lamentablemente no se percibe.

Como en casi todas las iglesias de nuestro país, las imágenes que evocan a los santos proliferan y acá se las comparto.

Frente a uno de los altares laterales, vean cuán sencillo es el lugar destinado para las velas que los feligreses ofrecen para acompañar sus oraciones.

La altura de su techo y los grandes ventanales ofrecen un clima que se agradece dentro de nuestro cálido país.

Un pequeño sitio para los músicos que animan los cánticos de las misas, destaca también por su modestia.
