Have you seen a rooster as tall as a two-storey building? If not yet, come to Manukan. Manukan is officially a municipality in Zamboanga del Norte. The name Manukan comes from the Visayan word manok meaning “chicken” or “poultry”, because chickens were plentiful in the area and its poultry contributed to chicken supply Northern Mindanao.

Manukan is located about 38 km west of Dipolog City (provincial capital) and 282 km northeast of Zamboanga City. Its neighboring municipalities are the municipality of Jose Dalman, Katipunan and Pres. Manuel Roxas.

The municipality is consists of both coastal area and mountain barangays or inland, remote places. Manukan is rich in aquatic resources, and its coastal shores is wonderfully and naturally stunning. The clear blue water of its sea is so tempting from the main highway and inviting every traveler to open its window to smell the sea breeze.

Other parts of its road are on inlands, that also offers stunning scenic view to the passersby and travelers. The lush greens give a peaceful and harmonious aura of the place.

The municipality proper is not crowded just how other municipalities usually are. And though the sun was really hot during my visit to their municipal hall, the wind was still cold and refreshing. People live humbly and peacefully in their simple homes.

The highlight of the municipality is its unique landmark which represents the name and economic value of the place. A unique rooster‑shaped museum/landmark which is a municipal landmark. The structure is about 13.60 meters tall; from bill to tail tip it measures around 19 meters. Inside, it houses collections like old traditional dresses, old coins, old items and tools used by local people.

I got the chance to looked closely at the structure, and all I could say is, that giant rooster is wonderful and remarkable!

Manukan may be a small town, but it’s full of charm, natural beauty, and cultural pride, and that giant rooster? Truly unforgettable!
