This is the 12th post of the Manali Leh Highway series. In the previous posts of this series, you have seen Himalayan Shepherds, Life of Changpa Tribe, Himalayan Rickshaw Run, Lahaul Valley, Maure Plains, Tanglang La, Naki La, Leh, Rohtang Pass and Lahaul Valley. See and know about this colorful earth. Today in this series we will talk about the storm of Maure Plains, the miraculous land of Manali Leh Highway.
Changpa tribe live with their animals in storms
Here I am again with the treasures of Maure Plains. Suddenly a huge plain appears in the Trans Himalayas, meaning a 40 km long plain amidst high mountains is no less than a miracle. Such a long empty space in the mountains and plains would hardly be found in any part of the world. Here such plains are called Maure Plains.
This place is a plain, neither grass can grow properly here, nor is there a single tree here...it is a dry desert. What remains here are storms formed by strong wind. You sit here for 20 minutes, and in these 20 minutes you will see more than 20 dust storms flying here. The Changpa tribe lives here with their animals and goes back to their homes as soon as winter sets in. Changpa people are the only ones who can fight the dust storms flying here.
In the photos you can see that on one side the sunset is taking place on the zenith of the Trans Himalayan Earth and dust storms are showing their power amidst the rays of the sun. A lake is being formed in the Maure Plains, this lake was not there earlier. It is said that there is no water here for animals, so this lake is being prepared by diverting a branch of a river towards Maure Plains.
When evening comes, all the animals along with their owner come to drink water on the lake, sheep and goats are drinking water and the storm is at its peak. The speed of the storm is so fast that suddenly the visibility becomes extremely low. When the storm calms down, the animals appear and I click away. Migratory birds have also started coming to this artificial lake, I have been able to capture them in half of the photos.
This post of 41 photos will give you a glimpse of Trans Himalayas where traces of life are not found even after searching. Seeing life in these sandstorms is nothing less than a miracle. Hope you like all the photos. See you in the next post.
