When Detours Lead to Paradise—Sumilon Island Adventure

When you travel you always have your itinerary to follow, planned beforehand but sometimes additional plan might be added when you have an extra time and that’s what I wanted to share to you now. Our eleventh hour Sumilon Escapade.

Hey Hives and @Worldmappin community! Welcome to my unplanned adventure with my siblings at Sumilon Island. It is quite far from the city proper but since we still have 1 day of extra time and the van is already rented for the day we decided to go south of Cebu and travel for around 4 hours just to visit some tourist spots in the area. But due to distance we start the farthest to nearest till we can return at the city at night.

But the time gives us different adventure for the spots we’re supposed to go were closed and due to traffic, we decided to go to Sumilon Island since the island now is the nearest in our current location and it is already lunch time without knowing the time it may take to reach the island.

We just then order for food and while preparing we went to the Island so we can make use the time. As we arrive at Sumilon Island, my family and I were too stunned by the view. The water is so clear, the sand is so white, and the island is so majestic, that is on my mind the music of Boys over Flower OST of Korean Drama was playing in my head singing “almost Paradise” just then my brother singing the song that made me say we think the same thing.

It is truly paradise. I don’t care the sun anymore. The water is crystal, the scenery amazed me. So, my family rushed hurriedly to the vast Sand bar. We took pictures of ourselves enjoyed the scenery but here comes the problem. Our attire is not suitable for swimming. Our plan is different, we’re supposed to just took picture, but the water is calling us, it hypnotized us to swim and so, “Splash!” my brother wearing a maong pants (Denim Pants) dive and swim without hesitation and my sisters joined wearing their Sunday’s dress.

I was in awe seeing them, what would I do? I am not that so healthy to shiver in cold when we return and ride the airconditioned Van while soaked and to travel another 4-5 hours back to our hotel. I can’t endure it. So, I resist and didn’t swim and just took pictures of them. I feel regretful and kind of sad of what happened so then I put into my mind that I will surely return to this place. Ready and geared up. Always Game for the Sumilon adventure. After around 30 minutes we returned and eat our ordered meal and returned to our hotel.

Not all journeys follow the map we set, and sometimes the detours become the real destination. Embrace the change, weigh the choices, and never be afraid to let the unexpected shape your adventure.
