IS MONTEBELLO WORTH VISITING? 😶[Eng/Esp]

Greetings, fellow human travelers, how are you?

First of all, happy New Year to everyone. I wish you all the best in 2026. This year I started by taking a short trip to a small town called MONTEBELLO, which is located about 1 hour and 30 minutes from the city of Medellín, Colombia.

The road to the town is fully paved, and along the way you’ll find beautiful landscapes throughout the journey (I went on my motorcycle).
The town itself is quite small and is known for having streets made of this type of brick, something very common and popular in some old towns in this region of Antioquia.

One very distinctive feature of this town is how cold it gets, especially after 6:00 p.m. In fact, the locals told me that fog sometimes appears and makes it hard to see. Since I went and came back on the same day, I didn’t get to experience this weather phenomenon, haha.

WHAT IS THERE TO DO?

Well, you can go up to the Cristo Rey viewpoint, from where you can see the town (something I couldn’t do because I didn’t know the way very well). However, I did visit the church, which is small. I liked its architecture, and it has a bell tower where the bell is rung when it’s time for Mass.

Something interesting I was told is that the church is supposedly built over a lake and that it sinks about 1 cm every year (I don’t know if this is true, but several people I asked told me the same thing).

I also came across a café located right next to the church. They sell delicious drinks, perfect for the cold weather in this town. I had a cappuccino that came with a cookie and this decoration, and my friend had a coffee milkshake.

One curious thing I noticed was that they had a photo with former Colombian president Iván Duque, who had been there years ago having a coffee.

As for the price, we paid around 6 dollars for both drinks, and I really liked both the service and the place.

As for whether it’s worth it, I think it isespecially if you travel by motorcycle, since you can better enjoy the landscapes, feel the air, and just go for a ride.
Overall, the town is very simple, and the food is tasty and affordable. Also, along the way you can stop at roadside eateries where they sell very delicious food. One piece of advice if you want to visit this town: bring warm clothing, because it’s cold in this area.
