The Belvedere on the Schöne Höhe – A Temple of Art and Goethe Reverence

How proudly I rise, Dresden, noble city upon the Elbe, when I look upon the treasures that crown my lands. Among them, the Belvedere on the Schöne Höhe in Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach shines as a radiant symbol of art, devotion, and reverence for the human spirit.

It was in 1831 that my dear friend and patron of the arts, Johann Gottlob von Quandt (1787–1859), commissioned this elegant edifice. Completed in 1838, it became nothing less than the earliest site dedicated to the veneration of Goethe, transforming architectural beauty into a living homage to Germany’s greatest poet.

The design was entrusted to the Dresden architect Joseph Thürmer, while the Nazarenic frescoes in the lower hall were painted by Carl Peschel, capturing in luminous form the spirit of Goethe’s poetry. Overhead, the wooden ceiling beams carry intricate ornamental patterns, conceived by none other than Gottfried Semper, whose vision still lends the space its quiet grandeur.

Time, however, does not pass without leaving its mark. Between 1999 and 2001, the Belvedere was lovingly restored – a collaborative effort of the municipality of Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach, supported by the Free State of Saxony, the East German Savings Bank Foundation, the Sparkasse Freital-Pirna, the German Foundation for Monument Protection, and the Quandt Association for the Promotion of the Arts. Their dedication ensured that this cultural temple could once more shine in its full glory.

And so it stands again, overlooking the hills, my Belvedere – a place where the soul finds peace, the spirit soars, and Goethe’s legacy resonates in stone, color, and devotion. To step within is to walk through a sanctuary of art, thought, and timeless inspiration.

Das Belvedere auf der Schönen Höhe – Ein Tempel der Kunst und Goetheverehrung

Ach, wie stolz erhebe ich mich, Dresden, die edle Stadt an der Elbe, wenn ich auf meine Umgebung blicke – und unter all den Kleinodien, die mein Land schmücken, glänzt das Belvedere auf der Schönen Höhe in Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach wie ein strahlendes Symbol der Kunst und der Verehrung des Geistes.

Im Jahre 1831 ließ mein kunstsinniger Freund und Mäzen Johann Gottlob von Quandt (1787–1859) dieses Bauwerk errichten, das nicht nur als architektonisches Juwel, sondern auch als erste Goethe-Verehrungsstätte gilt. Schon 1838 war es vollendet, ein Denkmal, das dem Dichterfürsten in Stein und Farbe ein bleibendes Andenken setzte.

Die Entwürfe schuf der Dresdner Architekt Joseph Thürmer, während der Innenraum im Untergeschoss mit nazarenischen Fresken geschmückt wurde – geschaffen vom Maler Carl Peschel, die Szenen aus Goethes Dichtungen in inniger Schönheit darstellen. Über dem Saal spannt sich eine hölzerne Balkendecke, deren ornamentale Entwürfe aus der Hand niemand Geringerem als Gottfried Semper stammen.

Doch auch die Zeiten haben an diesem Tempel genagt. Zwischen 1999 und 2001 erfuhr das Belvedere eine liebevolle Restaurierung, getragen von der Gemeinde Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach, unterstützt vom Freistaat Sachsen, der Ostdeutschen Sparkassenstiftung, der Sparkasse Freital-Pirna, der Deutschen Stiftung Denkmalschutz und dem Quandt-Verein Dittersbach zur Förderung der Künste e.V. – ein eindrucksvolles Zeugnis gemeinsamer Verantwortung für das kulturelle Erbe.

So thront es nun wieder über den Hügeln, mein Belvedere, ein Ort, an dem die Seele zur Ruhe kommt und sich der Geist erhebt. Wer seine Stufen betritt, der wandelt nicht nur durch Räume der Kunst, sondern auch durch die Gedankenwelt Goethes, durch die Visionen großer Meister und die Liebe eines Mäzens, der in mir, Dresden, sein Zuhause fand.
