"One more row and I'm done," Mama said, wiping sweat with the back of her hand and adjusting the wrapper tied on her waist.

Zainab was ten and she don't like the peanut farm .
Hated the red dust that got in her shoes.
Hated how the sun sat on her neck like it was angry.
Hated that her friends in town were at the river while she was here, pulling weeds.

"Why peanuts?" Zainab asked for the hundredth time. "Why not rice? Why not something easy?"

Mama didn't look up. She just kept working. "Because peanuts don't beg for water. Because when everything else fails, peanuts still grow."

That year the rains didn't come. The cassava dried. The maize burned.
Neighbors started packing their bags for the city.

But their little peanut farm?
It stayed green.

By harvest, traders were lining up at their gate. Bags and bags of it.
For the first time, they paid school fees early. They bought new shoes. They bought meat.

That very night Mama fried peanuts and poured them into a bowl. She pushed it to Zainab.
"Eat," she said. "This is what stubborn looks like."

Zainab laughed. "It's crunchy."

"It's survival my daughter," Mama said.

Zainab is 27 now. She has her own farm.
Not peanuts.
She grows tomatoes, peppers, onions. Things that need water and prayer.

And every time the rain delays, every time she wants to quit and go back to the city,
she remembers that dusty peanut farm.
