IGBO-UKWU BRONZE: THE ANCIENT AFRICAN BRONZE____21TH OCT

If you are from Anambra, you must have heard of Igbo-Ukwu.

Many people think bronze work only came from Benin or Ife. But in a small town called Igbo-Ukwu in Anambra State, something was discovered that changed African history completely.

In 1938, a man named Isaiah Anozie was digging in his compound to make a cistern........ As he dug, his shovel hit something hard. It was not stone. It was bronze. Shining objects, beautiful pots, staffs, and ornaments.

He did not know that what he just found would rewrite history.

Later, when archaeologists came — a man called Thurstan Shaw excavated the site in 1959 — they found three sites with thousands of bronze, copper and iron objects........... A burial chamber, a shrine, and a pit full of treasures.

The most shocking part? Carbon dating showed those bronzes were made in the 9th century. That is around 1,100 years ago!

This means our Igbo ancestors were doing highly advanced bronze casting — using lost-wax technique — hundreds of years before many people thought we could. The designs were so detailed, with tiny insects, spirals, and ropes, that even modern metal workers were surprised how they did it without modern tools.

Some of the famous pieces include the bronze pot with four legs, the ornate staff head, the pendant with the face, and the skull decorated with bronze.

What does it tell us? It tells us that Igbo-Ukwu had a powerful kingdom, with a wealthy king, priests, and artists who were masters. They were trading across Africa long before the white man came. It was not a small village. It was a civilization.

Today, those bronzes are kept in the Nigerian National Museum. But for us Ndi Anambra, it is pride. It proves our ancestors were not just farmers — they were scientists, artists, and kings.

Have you ever visited Igbo-Ukwu museum? Have you seen the bronze before?

If you are from Anambra, you should be proud of this history.
