Daily Prompt | That Special Store

I still remember that special neighborhood store. It was the typical corner store, but what made it special was the kindness and warm character of its owner.

Don Aladino was an older man — when I was a child he must have already been a good 60 or 70 years old. It's hard to say for sure, because when you're a little girl, all grown-ups fall into the same category: old.

I remember how, on the way back from school, we'd pass by Don Aladino's store and pool together a few coins to buy a bottle of "naranjil," the local version of a soda.

He always served us with a big smile, as if we were fine gentlemen, no matter that we could barely pay for the soda with a handful of small coins.

By the time I moved away from the neighborhood, Don Aladino was still running his store, and he seemed to be exactly the same age as when I first met him at six years old.

Years later I found out he had died, sitting on a church pew while waiting for Mass to begin. I can't imagine a more peaceful death for such a good man.

If I ever happen to pass through the neighborhood, I always look at the house where that special store used to be, where the owner always served with a smile.
