Analyst Of What? [Fiction]

“Wait, what? Analyst of what?” My foster brother Kayne asked, chuckling.

We had been trouble since childhood, the mischievous kind and in time, other kids learned to avoid us. As teenagers, we were not any better but bolder.

Kayne sometimes played the conscience but not this time. He couldn't change my mind. We must go through with my plan.

I placed a hand on his shoulder. “Analyst of endings. Trust me, she will believe it.”

His mouth fell open. “Endings? Of what?”

“You ask too many questions, my man. Endings of lives, of course. She's superstitious and will buy it.”

Kayne looked unsure, guilt on his face when Mrs Kath Maberry's name, our neighbour, came up. That night, we took Amber, our classmate, to her house. She played the medium and predicted Mrs Maberry's grim end—death by rat infestation. The only way out was to help clear out her garage and storage immediately.

She agreed. That became the perfect opportunity to reroute our water line into hers. The next day, she thanked us for saving her from dying at the hands of rats. I almost laughed.

While classes were going on, the principal called Kayne and I to his office. The moment I saw Amber and Mrs Kath Maberry seated, my stomach dropped.

“Oh no,” Kayne muttered as we took our seats. My hands suddenly became cold. I was on scholarship.

Amber wouldn't even look at us. Mrs Maberry scowled at me, her lips thinned in anger.

“So,” the principal began, a satisfied smile saying ‘I finally got you’ on his face. “It seems you boys have been quite busy. Amber here had a change of heart and decided to do the right thing. How I wish you boys would learn to do the same.”

Kayne and I stared at the floor, the weight of our act settling in. This mischief didn't go as planned.
