It never arrives with a warning, there is no alarm for it. No polite knock, it doesn’t need to introduce itself, just a sudden shift, like a bitter taste of herbal medicine at the back of your tongue. The phrase “ A dose of something unwelcome” can take many meanings or form: a harsh truth, an unexpected failure, a betrayal, relationships breakups or even when you realize that something are not as they once seemed to be.
At first, the quick reaction or instinct is to resist. We reject it, some Christian’s will pray and rebuke it, question it, try to dilute its outcome and impact. Just like medicine that burns going down, discomfort is rarely accepted l. Yet in many cases, what we perceive as unwelcome carries within it a strange necessities and outcomes. It disrupts comfort, forces reflection, and compels growth. It most at time leads to struggle or depression.
Consider failure, for instance. It feels like a cruel interruption of progress, an unwelcome reminder of limitation. But within it lies clarity., an exposure of weakness, a chance to rebuild stronger foundations. Without such doses, complacency thrives, and true improvement becomes distant.
Take example Arsenal football club in few years has fails to win the league title and coming 2nd place for three consecutive seasons and which discomfort the fans and also the players
Similarly, disappointment can reshape perspective. When expectations collapse, reality steps in. It’s always painful especially when you have lay down your plans towards the outcome, but it also sharpens awareness. You begin to see people, situations, and even yourself with greater honesty. What once seemed secure may look totally insecure, but those cracks allow light to enter.
Typical example may be when someone promises to help you with something, maybe money and you have already planned what to do with the money being promised and at the end the person disappoints you leaving you prone and sometimes depressed.
Even emotional pain, perhaps the most unwelcome of all, carries its own lessons. It teaches endurance, empathy, and human experience. Without it, joy would lose its meaning, reduced to something ordinary and unremarkable. Sometimes leading to breakup in relationships and friendships in the sense that the individual involved may not want to continue with such engagements.
However, I will say the many unwelcome doses are never beneficial. Some are simply harsh, unfair, or deeply hurtful. Life does not always measure its challenges with fairness sometimes people we see it as the cruelty of life. In such moments, the value lies not in the pain itself, but in the response to it. Strength is not found in avoiding hardship, but in navigating through it without losing oneself. Like my friend Ugochukwu always say “we learn the hard way”.
In conclusions, a dose of something unwelcome is part of life’s unpredictable nature. It reminds us that control is limited and helps us to remember and recognize who we really are and what we are capable of achieving, and comfort is temporary. Yet, within that discomfort lies an opportunity lies a lesson to learn from and grow, to adapt, and to emerge with a deeper understanding of both the cruel world and ourselves.
The bitterness may linger, but so does the lesson learned from it. Don’t expect too much from people!!
