Insights from Tensura Light Novel 13

Tensura is the shorthand title for Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken (or That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime). As the name implies, the light novel—as well as the manga and anime—tells the story of Satoru Mikami, a Japanese salaryman who dies after being stabbed and is subsequently reincarnated as a slime in a fantasy world.

In typical isekai stories, the protagonist is usually teleported via a magic circle to a castle or struck by the infamous "Truck-kun," magically appearing in the other world immediately afterward.

In Tensura, however, Satoru Mikami’s new body in the fantasy world was being formed simultaneously as he lay dying. Consequently, his various desires and moments of suffering manifested as skills in the new world—most notably "Predator" and "Great Sage."

Although it is a work of fiction chronicling a protagonist's journey in a classic isekai setting, the Tensura light novel offers valuable insights; the author, Fuse, delves deeply into economics, politics, and the development of both the map and the nation within the story. As I am currently re-reading Light Novel 13, I plan to share some interesting takeaways, providing context from the series whenever possible.

Insights from Tensura Light Novel 13

The first insight is a humorous one about always being wary of the unknown. In the midst of war, while awaiting the start of the clash, Generals Gobta and Gabil were sitting on the ground eating. Nearby, Testarossa and Ultima were seated at an extravagant table with a parasol, sipping tea. The two generals didn't realize it at the time, but those women would go on to devastate the enemy.

So, when approaching a new project or meeting new people, don't jump to conclusions; observe their behavior closely and seek out more information. If you encounter someone who remains incredibly calm in the middle of a war, be careful.

The next insight comes from Gabil's battle against the Empire's aerial forces. During the fight, the enemy wielded a weapon capable of disrupting and scrambling "magicules"—particles that function much like the cells of monsters. Accustomed to experimentation, Gabil seized this opportunity to try and master his new transformation ability.

However, this process left him vulnerable because he was standing still. His opponents assumed he would eventually be defeated, but that wasn't the case. In the end, Ultima resolved the situation, and Gabil succeeded in improving his control over the ability.

The takeaway here is the value of having the drive to learn and explore new things in order to grow—just as Gabil did. However, don't do this without a plan. In Gabil's case, had any of the adversary's elite troops been present, he might well have been defeated; similarly, it is unwise to try to learn something new when you have pending obligations.

Finally, there is a quote from Hakuro addressed to his troops regarding training: "I trained all of you, and with this training, you can cut through those piles of iron..." It begins with motivation for the troops, followed by a reflection; none of the soldiers complained. Had anyone done so, he would have said they needed more training—training even worse than the war itself.

Ultimately, it seems Hakuro wished he could have conducted additional training, but the enemy wouldn't wait for him. The insight here is that you should prepare in a way that is more rigorous than the actual task at hand—to the point where you no longer feel the need for more "training" and are ready for whatever comes next. For example, if you are preparing for an exam, study more rigorously than the exam itself requires.

Como o nome sugere, não só a Light Novel, mas o mangá e o anime, conta a história de Satoru Mikami um adulto assalariado do Japão que devia à uma fatalidade, uma facada, acabou morrendo e reincarnado como um slime em um mundo de fantasia.

Geralmente nas histórias de Isekai o protagonista acaba sendo teletransportado por um círculo de magia e acaba em algum castelo, ou é a atropelado pelo famoso Truck-kun e aparece magicamente já no outro mundo.

Só que no caso de Tensura, enquanto o Satoru Mikami estava morrendo, em paralelo era como se o novo corpo dele no novo mundo estivesse sendo criado. Assim, cada um dos desejos ou sofrimentos dele acabavam virando habilidades no outro mundo, sendo as duas principais: Predador e Grande Sábio.

Por mais que seja uma obra de ficção contando a trajetória do protagonista em um clássico isekai, é possível tirara alguns bons insights da Light Novel de Tensura, já que o autor Fuse aborda bastante o assunto de economia, política e desenvolvimento de mapa e de nação dentro da obra. Como estou dando uma re-lida na Light Novel 13, vou compartilhar alguns insights interessantes, dando sempre que possível o contexto da obra.

Insights from Tensura Light Novel 13

O primeiro é um insight engraçado, de ter sempre cuidado com o desconhecido. No meio da guerra, enquanto estavam aguardando o início do confronto os generais Gobta e Gabil estavam sentados no chão comendo. Ao lado estavam Testarossa e Ultima em um mesa extravagante com guarda-sol tomando um chá. Os dois não sabiam, mas elas futuramente devastariam o oponente.

Então, quando você está chegando à um novo projeto ou conhecendo pessoas novas não comece já tirando conclusões precipitadas, observe com atenção como se comportam, procure por mais informações. Se no meio de uma guerra tiver alguém muito calmo, tenha cuidado.

O próximo insight vem da batalha do Gabil contra os inimigos aéreos do império. Na batalha o oponente tinha uma arma que conseguia cancelar, embaralhando as magículas que seriam quase como as células dos monstros. Por ser alguém acostumado com experimentos, Gabil usou essa oportunidade para tentar controlar a sua nova habilidade de transformação.

Entretanto, nesse processo ele acabou ficando vulnerável porque estava parado. Os oponentes achavam que com o tempo ele acabaria sendo derrotado, mas não foi o que aconteceu. No fim a Última resolveu o problema e o Gabil acabou melhorando seu controle da habilidade.

Aqui é bom ter de insight que é sempre bom ter essa vontade de aprender e explorar coisas novas para evoluir, assim como Gabil conseguiu. Entretanto, não faça isso sem um plano. No caso do Gabil, se alguma das tropas mais fortes do adversário estivessem presentes talvez ele poderia ter sido derrotado, e no seu caso não é bom buscar aprender algo novo, se tem algum compromisso pendente.

Por fim, temos uma frase do Hakuro para as tropas deles sobre treino "Eu treinei todos vocês, e com esse treino vocês podem cortar aquelas pilhas de ferro..." Começando com uma motivação para a tropa e depois uma reflexão, nenhum dos soldados reclamou, se alguém tivesse feito ele diria que precisam de mais treino, um pior do que a própria guerra.

Por fim, aparece que Hakuro desejava que ele pudesse ter feito treinos adicionais, mas os inimigos não esperariam por ele. O insight aqui é que você deve se preparar de forma que seja pior do que a atividade fim que você tenha, ao ponto de você não pensar que precise de mais "treino" e já está pronto para o que vier. Por exemplo, se estiver se preparando para uma prova, então estude de forma mais rigorosa que a própria prova.
