Classic Chess Game: Garry Kasparov vs Vishwanathan Anand 1995

The 1995 World Chess Championship between Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand is one of the most famous title matches in chess history. It was played on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center in New York City under the Professional Chess Association (PCA) rather than FIDE. The first eight games were all drawn, setting a World Championship record for consecutive opening draws at the time. On round nine, Anand struck first with with an excellent strategic attack featuring the pawn thrust 17.b4. Kasparov came back on round ten with a surprise of his own. He opened with the super aggressive Evans Gambit, an opening not played at high levels.

The game started with 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. b4 Bxb4 5. c3 Be7 6. d4 Na5 7. Be2 exd4 8. Qxd4 Nf6

At the cost of a pawn, White has the lead in development and open lines. Black is ready to castle so White has to push to keep his initiative. 9. e5 Nc6 10. Qh4 Nd5 11. Qg3

The threat of kingside attack prevented Black from castling. 11. ...g6 12. O-O Nb6 13. c4 d6 14. Rd1 Nd7 15. Bh6 Ncxe5

Black is in trouble. He hasn't castled yet, his pieces are tied up, while White is very active. 16. Nxe5 Nxe5 17. Nc3 f6

Making room for his Knight to drive White's Bishop away. 18. c5 Nf7 19. cxd6 cxd6 20. Qe3 Nxh6 21. Qxh6 Bf8 22. Qe3+ Kf7

Funny, Black's pieces are in their original squares. He's up by two pawns but already has a lost position. 23. Nd5 Be6 24. Nf4 Qe7 25. Re1 { White wins. } 1-0

Anand resigned at this point and Kasparov evened the series. Black is going to lose a piece. Moving the light squared Bishop away will be met with Bc4+, winning a piece.
