Yeah the midges are vicious, more so on the West coast and bite you nonstop, the difference is they don't carry malaria and are fluffing tiny!
Mosquitoes do not transmit malaria usually here, except in the Amazon jungle, especially near the Brazilian border. And the smaller ones we call them in Spanish jején, there are many of those on the coast, and at sunset, at certain times of the year they can be an invasion.
