Hi there. How are you? I hope you are doing great. Welcome to my short diary for Wednesday, June 11, 2025!
On Wednesday, I worked as a relieving doctor in the nearby clinic. It was an easy day there. In the morning shift, from 8:30 am to 1 pm, I consulted only 10 patients in the chamber. In the evening shift, from 5 pm to 9:30 pm, I consulted another 13 patients. Hence, in total, I consulted only 24 patients in the chamber.
Most of them were routine cases. An above 100-year-old (according to her son) lady came. She was a regular patient there. She comes and takes injections or intravenous fluids! This time, she came with right knee pain. It was a quite deformed and swollen joint, consistent with gross osteoarthritis. She just took a paracetamol injection!
On my way back home after the morning shift duty, I went to Lulu Hypermarket to purchase a few necessary items. I bought vegetables, fruits, eggs, milk, pasta, etc. I spent over 11 OMR there!
At home, I could walk on the treadmill for 20 minutes. It helped me reach over 8k steps on Wednesday. As usual, I had a morning sleep and afternoon nap!
It could be a new one or a reminder
Drug Overdose is a significant cause of death. Data showed that in the US, in 2024, over 80,000 deaths were attributed to drug overdose (DOD- drug overdose death). In the previous year, the number was much higher. Opioid, especially fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is the most involved drug in the DOD cases!
Interestingly, opioids, including fentanyl, are medically useful drugs. Opioids are prescribed as a pain medicine, but at the lowest effective dose. Fentanyl is used as a powerful painkiller during and after surgery! Misuse of these drugs brings trouble!
A Cleveland Clinic video mentioned three important signs of an opioid drug overdose. You will find the video at the end of this post. I am going to highlight the main points.
A person with an opioid overdose becomes very sleepy or passes out
The central nervous system becomes depressed, leading to impaired breathing (shallow or slower). Lack of oxygen supply to the brain, heart, and other vital organs (due to impaired breathing) is the cause of death!
The pupils of the eyes become pinpoint.
Prompt administration of a naloxone injection in a confirmed or suspected opioid (narcotic) overdose can save a person!

I have always been very careful not to take more of the pain meds than needed. I know too many people who have lost their lives due to them. I have Narcan at home, in case one of my children overdoses.
