Short Diary On Tuesday | Chamber Talk | Alive and Thriving on May 27, 2025 | Extra (HIVE + Health) Titbits

Hi there. How are you? I hope you are doing great. Welcome to my short diary for Friday, May 23, 2025!

I consulted 28 patients on Tuesday. The evening shift was quite an easy one. Unlike the morning shift, all three GP doctors were on duty in the evening. Moreover, the patient flow was also less. As a result, it was an easy shift!

There is a paracetamol 1000 mg injection. It's a 100 ml bottle. Hence, it looks somewhat like small IV fluid. It's one of the most prescribed intravenous injections in Oman.

Fever? Injection paracetamol!

Headache? Injection paracetamol!

Body pain? Injection paracetamol!

Abdominal pain? Injection paracetamol!

It takes around 10-15 minutes to finish the bottle through the IV route. There are some elderly patients around who only come for this injection. It's nothing but two paracetamol tablets! On Tuesday, at least two elderly patients came to receive this injection.

On Tuesday, I did almost 12k (11,818) steps. I didn't walk on the treadmill. All the tests are from the casual walk. In the afternoon, I went to a supermarket. Walking there added some steps too!

It could be a new one or a reminder

Health Titbit

Tonsils, Tonsillitis, and Tonsillectomy (surgical removal of the tonsils)

Tonsils are the lymphoid glands on either side of the throat. Along with some other lymphoid tissue at the beginning of the airway and food passage, it forms Waldeyer’s ring. This ring acts as the first line of defense against pathogens. However, the tonsils themselves may become infected, inflamed, congested, and enlarged, leading to acute, recurrent, or chronic tonsillitis.

Recurrent and chronic tonsillitis leads to frequent use of antibiotics. Enlarged tonsils (along with adenoids, another lymphoid gland at the back of the nasal passage) may lead to sleep disturbance or breathing abnormalities. These are quite common in children. To protect the children, surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy) is quite a common procedure. Still, some parents are reluctant to do so out of fear.

Even though surgery comes with some risks, tonsillectomy still brings a positive outcome. Some studies suggest so. A recent study revealed that the children who underwent surgery enjoyed a 32% lower encounter with the healthcare system. There was also nearly a 50% reduction in needing a prescription! Another study published in 2024 showed that those who had their tonsils removed experienced reduced ENT infections, notably middle ear infection, strep throat, sinusitis, influenza, etc.
