Thursday Diary

It was an average busy day at work, where I consulted 27 patients in my chamber. For most of the time, there was no rush except for the last hour when a few patients came together. However, I could finish the duty on time.

One man below 40 came with chest pain for the last 4-5 days. I did an ECG, and it revealed some results consistent with an acute heart attack, but it was doubtful too. Hence, I suggested doing a cardiac enzyme, which was a somewhat costly test. He agreed to do the test. Alhamdulillah, the cardiac enzyme wasn't elevated, meaning it wasn't an MI case. It was a relief for both the doctor and the patient :)

Another young, lean & thin patient came with sudden episodes of hemoptysis (coughing up blood). He had no history of infection, chest pain, or chest trauma. I did an X-ray, and it revealed some abnormalities that were consistent with TB (tuberculosis). So, I sent him to another hospital to do a sputum test and consult a chest physician.

At home, I had a morning sleep and an afternoon. I accompanied my kid in his two online classes. I couldn't walk on the treadmill. I did 8573 steps on Thursday.

Dark Chocolate and Type 2 DM

People who consume dark chocolate, not milk chocolate, at least 5 servings per week are at a 21% lower risk of developing type 2 DM! A study by Harvard researchers recently published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) revealed this. The study result is the summation of three studies: the Nursesโ€™ Health Studies I and II and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.

The study period was 34 years, and there were a total of 192,000 US adults in those three studies. Of them, 112,000 participants consumed dark chocolate over time! At the end of the study, 19,000 participants developed type 2 DM. Out of 19,000 diabetics, only 5000 were from the dark chocolate-eating group!

Dark chocolate has many other health benefits, besides the protection against type 2 DM. However, to get the maximum health benefit, it must have at least 70% cocoa solids! The high levels of flavanols in dark chocolate do the magic!

It was indeed a very busy day for you at work. How you manage it with that of the family's duty and still accompanying your child in his online class and still find time to rest is quite commendable. Honestly speaking, it's all about intentional planning and placing priorities right.
