This is my entry for Weekly Featured Content Week 240 - Episode 03.
Crowdfunding is something we see everywhere now. On Facebook, on Twitter, on GoFundMe, on WhatsApp status. Someone is sick, someone needs school fees, someone lost their house. And people will say "please help, donate here". It has become a normal way of sourcing funds online.
To be honest, crowdfunding is a good idea. It helps people who have no other place to go. I have seen people raise money for hospital bills, for surgery, for school projects. Some students use it to fund their final year project or startup idea. Without crowdfunding, they would have no hope. So I think it is a beautiful thing that the internet can bring strangers together to help one person.

But the problem is trust.
These days it is very easy to defraud people online. Some people will create a fake story, use fake pictures, and start collecting money. They will say "my mother has cancer" and it is a lie. After they collect the money, they disappear. Because of this, many people are now scared to donate. They will see a real person suffering and they will think it is another scam.
So can I trust online donor platforms? My answer is 50/50. I trust some platforms, but not all. Platforms like GoFundMe, Kickstarter, Patreon have some level of verification and they have built reputation over years. So I can trust them more than a random link someone drops on WhatsApp. But even on trusted platforms, bad people still find a way to cheat....... So we still need to be careful.
I have not done crowdfunding before, but I have donated small money once for a friend who needed drugs. And I also once saw a case in my school where a girl lied that she needed money for her father's burial, and later we found out it was fake. That experience made me more careful.
How can such platforms be more transparent? I think there are few things they can do.
First, they should verify every campaign. Ask for ID, medical report, school letter, or any proof before they allow the campaign to go live. Not just allow anyone to post anything.
Second, they should show updates. The person collecting money should be forced to post updates on how the money was used. Pictures, receipts, hospital bills. So that donors will see that their money was used well.
Third, they should have a refund system. If it is discovered that a campaign is fake, donors should get their money back quickly.
Fourth, they should show the identity of the campaign owner clearly. Real name, social media, not anonymous accounts.
Lastly, they should work with trusted people in local communities to confirm stories.
Crowdfunding can change lives if we do it honestly. But if we continue to allow fraud, people will stop helping and the people who really need help will suffer.
So I believe online donation is good, but platforms need to be more strict and transparent to protect both donors and receivers.

And these people with the fake story are stopping those who really need help from getting the help that they need.
